Son-in-law Day!

Jamai shashthi, jamai, son-in-law.

Ever heard of son-in-law day? No? Well, such a day does exist in the culture of Bengalis in India. Supposed to be an auspicious day which falls during the summer months as per the Bengali calendar, it is an age-old tradition to pamper the son-in-law on such a day at the in-law’s residence.

On this day, Goddess Sashthi is worshipped who is believed to be the protector of couples and children.  There is a popular folklore which describes her powers of protection through a tale of a Hindu household.

In modern day and age, this day has become more of a social event rather than a religious one. It is a day that mothers-in-law pamper their sons-in-law by giving gifts and preparing special meals for them. Sons-in-law often reciprocate by getting gifts for their in-laws, often carefully selected by the daughter herself.

Nowadays, most prefer to take their sons-in-law to their favourite restaurants and what’s more, it has become a reason for popular brands to announce discounts on men’s clothes or for jewellery shops to come out with special schemes for this occasion especially.

In these times when families live apart and most are busy in their own lives, this occasion provides a chance for getting together and sharing a meal with your loved ones.
