The Benefits of Law

There are many benefits of having laws, using the Singaporean gum law as an example.

Laws are made to prohibit actions morally unacceptable by the general public.

It is said that there are too many laws in Singapore. This can lead to both positive and

negative effects. Having so many laws can be positive, for without laws, not only

Singapore but the rest of the world would be in chaos. But with so many laws, there is

restricted freedom, “rigid” and the country would be leaning towards communism, which

would ultimately be worse for the country on the whole.

It is thanks to laws that we can live peacefully and without worries. It is

because of these laws that reduces crime and give us a direction to follow. Without these

laws the country would be full of chaos and out of control. In 1990 there was 2034 crimes

but then; new and more logical laws had been written and the crime rates had plummeted

ever since.

However, if there is too much of anything, it would turn bad. This is the

same with the laws in Singapore; too many laws stopping citizens’ rights. As said, life

would be “rigid”, for example, due to the spitting of gum and littering, Singapore had

banned all usage of chewing gums and would lead to a fine. Many other

people would find this law highly illogical and there should not be such stupid laws.

Due to this, I agree with the statement that claim “there are too many laws in

Singapore thereby making life here very rigid”, for I am one of those people that highly

disagree with the banning of gum and communism. Laws are needed, but there should not

be too many so it would rather have negative instead of positive effects on the nation.

I have always felt that laws are good to give us shape (support) like our bones, yet like our skin and other outer organs we are beyond them…
