I think it would have been stressful too, Brian, unless you have a lot of time on your hands. Thanks for your comments.

I have had to go twice, but both times I was sent home. I was looking forward to it, as an experience, and in doing my part as a citizen, but both times I was disappointed. On the other hand, I have a full life, and being pulled away from my other responsibilities (the potential of a long and drawn out trial) would have been stressful. Brian

Hi,Catelin! Great comments and great complaints too. You might be one of the ones that can get out of jury duty with a chronic back condition.

Gail
I agree with some of your points. I do think jury duty selection needs to be improved. It is really a hardship to go and wait to see if you would be selected. The last time I had to go I had a drive of nearly an hour, (one way) then I had to wait all day long. Yep 8 AM to 5 PM. My employer would not pay me for jury duty absence...few do today.

Now the way they summons you, it makes it difficult for a person who has litgit reason such as no child care or an elderly parent to care for to be excused. How on earth can you leave your child or your parent for a whole day to appear while they try to decide if your reason to be excused is reasonable?

But to ask for volunteers, if 99% of the population try every way they can to get out of jury duty, where do you think they will find these volunteers. If they would pay a fair wage it would help many to feel willing to serve as a juror. If they wouldn't be so hard-nosed about excusing a person due to having children or an ailing elderly parent to care for, it would also be viewed in a more positive light.

Would I mind sitting on a jury? NO, not if I didn't have my father who needs care 24/7 or a chronic back condition which makes it very difficult for me to sit or stand for very long without having pain that is often buckling.

Oh! I really love this one. I agree with you. Doing something against your will is still considered coercion.
