Wolverine Leak Raises Concern Over Online Piracy

A brief look at online piracy and steps that can be taken to prevent illegal downloads.

The recent leak of the latest “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” movie online about a month before its scheduled release has raised new concerns about illegal downloads and online piracy. This act of copying and distributing  another person’s work unlawfully has become a menace to the society particularly the industries which are directly involved such as the music and film industry.

Consequently the results of this activity leaves a trail of negative economic effects particularly a reduction in   sales of legitimate copies of CDs and DVDs hence unnecessary loss of profits. Although some might argue that it is difficult to totally eradicate this trend, the following measures should be put in place to help reduce its effects as much as possible.

Copyright laws should be reinforced wherever possible while technological protection such as digital marking should be implemented. Also, legal protection through lawsuits could be targeted at certain service providers and users of P2P networks while tightening  pre-release security.

Furthermore, more measures could be put in place to stop illegal download and copying of digital products on to disc such as increasing awareness amongst the publish through campaigns and advertisement in the media and investment in technological research that could limit copyright infringement to the bearest minimum. Finally publishers should also be warned and increasingly reminded of their responsibility in ensuring that copyright is  obtained before downloadable programs and files placed on their website.
