10 Ways to be Happy

Generally, happy people live longer and more fulfilling lives. We all have the ability to be happy – sometimes it just takes reminding ourselves that happiness is ours to enjoy, regardless of the amount of money we have or our social status.

  1. Be Present.  Being present means doing and being exactly in this moment – instead of living in the past or waiting for the future to define happiness.

  2. Be Grateful.  Studies have shown that people who make it a habit to write down at least a few things each day that they are grateful for, enjoy a fuller life.

  3. Stop Judging.  Judging ourselves, others, or a situation keeps the negativity swirling around whatever we are judging. Accepting “what is” allows us freedom to move on because we can move through any situation.

  4. Stop Expecting Perfection.  We’re not born perfect. Our circumstances are rarely considered perfect.  When we stop expecting perfection to be the only attainable goal, we learn to thrive on progress and change.

  5. Choose To Be Happy. We’ve all been at the crossroads between love and hate, happy and miserable, or forgiving and judgmental.  When we choose to pick an enlightened path, our troubles, anger, and resentment fall away.  Remember to laugh and have fun!

  6. Practice the Laws of Attraction.  Whatever we focus our mind and energy on is what we attract.  If we focus on not having money or a job, then the Universe provides exactly our focus.  But if we turn our energies into believing in what we can do or have, the Universe provides accordingly.

  7. Create Your Desires.  Take steps (even baby ones) that are positive actions towards your desires.

  8. Reevaluate Your Belief System.  For many, this may mean reevaluating a religion you have aligned yourself with.  Do your beliefs allow for an abundance of love for all?

  9. Be Content With What You Have.  You’re a unique person — there’s no need to judge your happiness based on a scale of how you measure up to your neighbors, co-workers, or even a society in general.  Having a certain label on your clothing or driving a particular car won’t necessarily bring you happiness, if you are doing it to keep up with others.

  10. Be Helpful.  Extending yourself and helping another, without looking for reciprocation, can be one of the most rewarding ways to create your own happiness.  Find ways to “pay it forward” or do random acts of kindness big and small, and watch the effect it has on you!

In 2003, I had emergency surgery and I almost died. I am completely healthy now. That made me look at my life and try to live it to the fullest. I try to find happiness in everything I do. Thanks for a great article.

You have some very good points. Sometimes things like that are really difficult to follow, but it’s worth the effort.

You are right. Happiness is a choice. You can either be happy or sad. It’s your call.
