Can the Sweet be Sweeter After Some Bitter?

I hear many people talk about living in a world without pain.

In fact, many people strive to achieve this goal. But pain is inescapable. Pain is a universal truth. Pain affects us all in the form of family problems, relationship issues, physical aches, economic and social pressures. Those of us that say we don’ t hurt are not paying attention to ourselves and our surroundings. We forget the love that could have been. We forget about the money our loved ones loan us even though they struggle with the rent. We forget about the friends that have helped us through some very tough times. We also forget that others are human as well. However, once we forget about the pain we also forget about the lesson learned in that trying experience. Pain is a quality that allows us to further appreciate what we have and our surroundings. Let me make a comparison to sweets.

If every good moment could be equated to sugar, then all the bad moments would be like horseradish. Now if we had a spoonful of sugar once, we would be amazed at how sweet it was. The next time we had a spoonful of sugar we would still be able to discern its sweet qualities, however it wouldn’t taste as good as the first spoonful. Over time, if we have only had sugar, we would eventually become numb to the taste of sugar and we would lose the appreciation of its sweet quality. However, if we experience something bitter, for the sake of this example the horseradish, then our palate will be cleansed and would be able to taste the sugar yet again.

Pain works in very much the same way. If we choose to ignore it or put it away, never to experience it, then the good moments seem to lose their meaning. We would take any good news as just the daily prescription and not as the blessing it really is. We begin to demand only positive feedback from our experiences and we run away from the best growing opportunities.

We must learn to grow from the pain in our lives so, when we look back and reflect on our past, we can use it as a guideline for better understanding and appreciating your present situation so that we can have a better future.
