Detrimental Thoughts

Our mind runs wild with detrimental thoughts from who knows where. These negative thoughts causes stress and failure. It’s time to learn how to be aware and let them cause no harm.

Our mind is busy non stop every minute we are awake and even when we sleep we dream. I have come to think our thoughts are out to get us, to set us up for failure and despair, to knock us down before we can stand. Where do all these thoughts come from? Nobody knows for sure but we can be aware that they are a detriment to our own good.

Our thoughts tell us we are too fat, too short, too fair, too dark, too ugly, too stupid, and everything else negative we can think of. These negative thoughts run through our heads all the time and set us up for failure. It is impossible to turn off our thought process but we can be aware that it is not to our advantage to listen to it. We can stop and be aware. Not react to our thoughts, not stress on them, but stop and be aware.

We can be aware and live in the moment as much as possible. Feel our heart beat in this moment. Be aware of the work we are doing in the moment, not projecting what will happen tomorrow, not living over what happened a week or a year ago. All that is futile and deterring any good in the present. Yesterday has passed and tomorrow is not here. Only this moment is of any consequence. Be aware of the here and now.

Most people do not live in the present. They live in regrets of the past and hopes for the future. They are not aware. They react to every negative thought and are not living in the present. Remember that almost all thoughts are negative. Become aware and you will see it is true. Our thoughts never shut up. We can only suppress them for a short time but we can become aware and learn not to react to them. We can remain aloof from them, be aware that they are trouble makers and disregard them.

When you have sad thoughts from a happening in the past, become aware of your thoughts. Don’t react just be aware. When you project what is going to happen at that important meeting tomorrow, be aware. You can’t be at two places at once. You can be here in the moment or you can be lost in your thoughts. Be aware of your thoughts and think of them as intruders and keep apart from them.

I have been practicing this for some time now and I can tell a great difference in everything I do. I am much more positive in my outlook and more successful in everything I undertake. I am better able to look at my thoughts as from a distance and not be stressed by them. I can tell my writing has improved. It has been a wonderful process for me.

I began by staying in the here and now every possible moment. When I am in the process of doing something I think only about the process and feel the accomplishment of the moment. When my mind wanders and thoughts creep in I stand aside and do not react to any of my thoughts. When sad thoughts come in , again, I step aside and am aware but distant. It has freed me so much not to have to react to every thought that comes in my head. I feel like a person released from prison. I hope you will give it a try and see if you can be a happier more satisfied person.

Let me think about it. Just kidding. You’re right. I dwell a lot on past mistakes and worry about tomorrow’s mountains.

Live in the ‘now’; easy to say, but difficult to brake a wandering mind for most people. Good article.

You are so right in everything you say Ruby, excellent advice .. too many of us live in the past or worry about the future when we should be getting the most out of now. Excellent article.

This sounds much a class I took on ‘Mindfulness” – just training your thoughts on what is happening right now. It is very useful for curbing our tendency to go on autopilot, not paying attention to what we are doing.

I have found that if I think of something else that I need to attend to, I will write it down so that I can finish what I am doing now and not forget what I need to attend to later.

I agree that all too often we worry about problems of the past and future when we shouldn’t But, I do think that being mindful of the problems of the past keeps us from making the same mistakes over again. And, being mindful of the future helps us prepare ourselves so that we do not have to depend on those that were mindful. Of course, there is an extreme to both sides…..being careless and never thinking past your own nose vs being so overly obsessed with the past and future that now is never enjoyed. Everything in moderation, I guess.

I have a very rebellious mind that fixates on things, and they run round and round in my head. I use computer games, reading fiction, and painting to focus my thoughts and break out of the spiral. Some weeks take a LOT of fantasy to get through the real world.

This is a very intresting subject, Ruby. I tend to be a dweller and think about thinks too much. I feel sometimes like my mind is racing in to many different directions. I will have to try this and see if it works for me. I may have to write to you for more advice on your method. Thanks you for a well written article. I could tell it came from your heart.

This is great advice. Have you also noticed how freaking repetitive the mind can be too – especially with the negative thoughts. When you become aware of those thoughts, it’s amazing how repetitive it is

Thank you my friends. It’s something you have to remind yourself of often and still your mind will wander off. When you find thoughts streaming in just be aware and don’t let it effect you emotionally. When your mind is quiet is when you will get answers. I believe all knowledge comes from the center of stillness.

Interesting – but I’m with a few of the others and find this approach ineffective. For me, of course the present is important but I spend a lot of time with people who DO NOT learn from the past (by spending time reflecting) and they DO NOT think with a future perspective (strategic thinking). This actually makes them very ineffective (if calm) in the present.

Thanks for the stimulation – revivor
