Emo
A REAL description of Emo (sub)culture.
What Is Emo?
People have been asking me.
It was first a type of song (we all know this, so I’ll move on). EMO now means your in touch with your emotional side. It is sometimes a side effect of depression, but is often just a stage of self-realization.. It is commonly related with goth but emo people can also wear the brightest things; in a sense, they wear their emotions on their clothes because they have difficulty expressing them otherwise. Sometimes it is hard to tell because they only cry in private and are very personal, and other times they do not attempt to conceal emotional toil and cry in public without care for who sees or hears. Some can be classified as loners.
Emo = “Emotional?”
Emo is a slang term known to be short for emotional, but that doesn’t make much sense really. If you claim “emo” were to mean “emotional” it then becomes an all encompassing word. It becomes extremely vague and it has no limit as to what it can describe. Emo when wrongfully used to mean “emotional” describes every living thing, every song, every word, every breath, every statement.
Lifestyle
When referring to a person’s personality and attitude, most definitions of emo include a number of the following terms: shy, quiet, mysterious, introvert, angst ridden and sensitive often identified by his/her music and fashion. (generalizing here). Artistic talent is known to be associated with the emo culture along with a degree of sophistication and depth. Emos can feel they are misunderstood by society.
Self Harm?
Self harm is wrongly associated with the emo culture and the media has played a large part in this describing the emo scene as dangerous.
POSERS!!!
The ones who are emo not because they feel it, but because they like to be trendy are named ‘posers’. Apparently a big percent of the current emo subculture is formed by posers.
No one can truly define what an emo is… The only way to discover is to BE it, and no one who does not feel it can be it. To me, it’s life. MY life. I’m not the best at expressing my feelings the “normal” way, so I find other outlets. I haven’t dressed the part in a while, but I’ve found other ways to express myself.
Emo is just a way of being the same person on the outside as the inside, although to others it appears much different. It’s not white and black, goth, etc… It’s YOU, whatever YOU may be.

Nice article on EMO – I think you always should be yourself and if you wear your feelings on your sleeve that isn’t such a bad trait. To me it just means that you’re sensitive to others which most people would appreciate. Splendid article!
