Finding a Balance Between Work and Play
Ancient Chinese philosophers understood the principle of balance. They knew, all those years ago, that mankind is not meant to live in a world of extremes.
And yet many of us will find ourselves in the position of either working to the very limits of our ability, without replenishing our energy system, or burning the midnight oil until we have no enthusiasm for work.
The key to a happier life is to take a leaf out of the philosophers book. We need to find balance between our playtime and our time of work or study.
Depending on our personality we may need to also make time to be alone with our thoughts. Introverts are especially prone to stimulation over-load. For them, some peace and quiet can be as refreshing as a holiday. When they don’t get this time they become grouchy and miserable.
For all of us a lack of balance can mean that we are left feeling ill and in need of replenishment. But changing our habits and schedules isnt always easy. Especially if others push us to try to get as much out of us as possible.
If you are constantly plagued by little illnesses or find yourself with a short fuse then it is probably time to make some positive changes. If your boss expects more from you than is healthy for you to give then they need to be told that you have an optimal work load level.
This means that you will perform extremely well and remain healthy, meaning that you need less days off of work sick, if your boundaries are respected.
In your personal life you may also be too busy. its great to have fun but socialising can lose its appeal if you are so tired that you can barely function. By setting yourself the rule of having just few nights out a week, you can build your energy levels up and will enjoy yourself all the more for it.
