Good Humor: Learning How to “belly Laugh’

Getting rid of the ideas, notions, and regimens that make us old, cranky and uncivil.

It is written somewhere that laughter is: “good medicine for the soul.”  Your soul longs for more playfulness in your daily activity. Somehow, somewhere along the path you have turned into an intolerable Grinch. Being so stoic and foreboding, you are pushing away a lot of pleasant and enjoyable opportunities. By being so consumed with money matters and the idea of success/position/ prestige, your authentic life has been put on hold. You have become so shallow and vain, that you can’t even appreciate a good soda and popcorn without feeling awkward. When is the last time that you walked in the rain, played on the beach (in the sand), road a roller coaster?  When, in fact, have you allowed yourself to do anything that you did not perceive as productive or necessary? You are far too old for your years.

What has happened is that while you were trying to be ‘something’, you became ‘something’ very boring and disinteresting.  Accept it. You are no longer any fun to be around. People who once loved to be in your company have slowly one by one drifted away. The worst thing about that is you have rationalized their leaving as something necessary and beneficial. Life is formulated and sustained by the relationships you engage in. Being truly involved with others indicates a fullness of heart, body and mind. It also requires of you to ‘belly laugh.’ Along the way, you have forgotten and devalued the significance of play. Walking barefoot, frolicking in the grass, playing ball, ‘making whoopee’ in the most bizarre places and inauspicious times, going to see a movie you currently deem inappropriate, laughing for no reason whatsoever without feeling the need to explain, hopping on a plane to head to an unknown forbidden destination. Something in you is missing. You’ve felt that ‘icy’ void for a long time. But, you’ve continued to deny its ‘red flag’. You are an artist. You always knew this funky truth about yourself but didn’t know how to express it much less defend the insoluble need it has created in you. You can no longer deny its impact. Jump into the flame that burns illogically from the bottom of your feet. You are headed to a specific destination called, “Hallmark Inn”. There you will meet and greet the person who ‘flicks your stick’. It ain’t nothing personal. It’s just something you must do in order to push past the barricade that prevents YOU from being YOU. What has age got to do with it?

That is so true. We all need to lighten up and enjoy what is good in our lives and not dwell on the depressing bits. Fortunately I do like a good belly laugh at times. A very uplifting and well written article

I try to have humor in my life, but it seems that the people around me have become that most humorless bunch of humanoids, POLITICIANS!

If you do not please “the powers that be”, there will be no life with humor because you will be out on the streets, homeless and pan-handling, unless you submit to the humor inflicted on the public by the people who have no sense of humor. (See network television and “commercial radio”)

I revel in the ridiculous, but not the inanity that comes from what passes (gas) for the writers of the (schlock) television sitcoms (which are not even real situations or even comedic). Penn Gillette once commented that he might give up magic for a run for Congress, for there is so much humor there, but they take themselves entirely too seriously.

Extend yourself, expand your horizon, seek new markets and new experiences and laugh at how absurd you appear to others and how absurd they appear to you. Humor is growth of the mind and the heart, seek it out and take it in!
