How to Live Without Regrets and Get the Life You Want
How to handle mistakes and regret and make your dream life become a reality.
Self-Assessment
In order to live out your dreams, you need to start from a place of Truth. This means understanding yourself, owning your past mistakes and recognizing your weaknesses. There is a big difference between self-assessment and self-loathing. Be sure you are being fair to yourself when you think about these problems. You will usually find the mistakes you made were done with the best of intentions, so there is no need to beat yourself up.
Managing Mistakes
Managing your mistakes means accepting what you did, but no longer judging yourself for it. See it as a lesson learned and pledge to avoid the same mistakes in the future. You might need to make amends with someone to feel better about a mistake, but be careful with apologies. They can backfire and damage a friendship. Once you come to terms with your mistakes, you will have a better understanding of yourself and what pitfalls to avoid in the future.
Map Out Your Plan
Your self-assessment is like putting a red dot on a map that says, “You are Here”. The next thing to do is mark in your mind where the map is leading to. Finally, you need to consider concrete steps you can take to get from Here to There.
Choices
It is important to recognize that you have choices. You are not trapped in your current lifestyle. The only obstacle between you and your dreams is you. Look at where you are and where you want to be. What steps need to be made? There is often a concern about finances when making a big change in your life. Should you be saving up for when you make the switch? Notice the WHEN, not IF.
Once you have established your road map and the steps needed to reach your dreams, you should start a journal that will help you track your progress. The road is long and a journal will help motivate you when you get discouraged. You will be able to see the steps you have taken towards your dreams and pat yourself on the back for a job well done.
Putting your dreams into a plan transforms them into reality. They are no longer “what if”s, but simply the future that will become your life.
