In Control
How true it is that many of us ignore the cold reality so that we can continue to live in our own wonderful world of lies.
The truth that we are not in control of everything makes us feel insecure, and therefore, many of us choose to be blind to it. However, when we choose to overlook the fact that we cannot control our results, our self esteems will collapse when our results don’t meet up with our expectations. Our expectations are limited and sometimes changed because of the things we cannot control.
First, we must acknowledge that there is a designer, a mastermind, behind our lives, behind our world. And it is because we have Him, that our lives are not chaotic or completely random. There is someone who knows the correct “answers” and “decisions” for us. That does not mean we have no control over anything. We do have some control over things even though the designer created it. For i.e. we are taking Sparrow’s exam. We do not know the exact questions that may be on Sparrow’s test, so we can argue that it’s impossible to ace the test. However, we are actually thrown with many choices of what we can do. We have little control over our test grades,(that is up to Sparrow), but we do have control over some things – studying, taking notes, and asking questions in class – and you might still score an A on the test or you might not. This is our freedom of choice; this is what God has freely given us.
We have control over our expectations and choices, but we never have control of our results. Therefore, knowing this, I learned that I should control my expectations to a moderate balance so that I wouldn’t be too disappointed when my expectations don’t match up with the results. If my expectations were too high, then I might be greatly discouraged with a low result. If I have low expectations, then I wouldn’t be really productive because I’ll always be satisfied with poor results. So, if I keep my expectations at a moderate level, then I won’t be disappointed either way.
