Just Do It: Words Not to Live by
There are so many activities that stem from the saying in the title.
“You should floss, you’re supposed to work 40 hours a week, just plow through that math homework of yours, or don’t complain and just do it”. They are just so mindless though, no one can get a handle on all of them, but you don’t have to. It’s bothering to hear those terms “Supposed To, Just Plow Through It, and Just Do It” because it means you’re never thinking about them. There’s always something to be thought about on every action, decision, opinion, and etc you take on life, except for math.
A very linear, narrow-minded person will say something like “Oh just do it, don’t think about it so much”. You should try to think about what job you want, don’t just apply for one. Weigh the consequences and benefits of everything you do. The only thing in life that this philosophy should not be used is on math. There is one way, one answer, and one outcome with math. This is the only time that ever applies. For every other action in life there are some other angles, ways, and outcomes to apply and receive.
Examples:
1 + 1 = 2: One way and one outcome
If you were an adventurer in a far away land you could do millions of things when you wake up in the morning. Go back to sleep, have breakfast, walk your dog, slay a dragon, smoke pipe weed, go out in the woods, and the possibilities are endless. You go out in the woods and find a magical goblin. He’ll kill you if you don’t kill one friend of yours and he’ll kill your family if you try to kill him. What do you do?
The possibilities are endless with every decision you make. Think about your political views. Do you have one? Why? Why are you liberal, conservative, an anarchist, a fascist, or a registered independent?
Do you like your job? Why or why not? What gives you purpose in life? What can you do to fix the problems you’re suffering from? Don’t be complacent with your life if you have a problem. Think about the problem, what you can do to fix it, and then actually do it.
Are you happy with yourself? Why or how did you get there? What can you do to change your life to make it better? If something doesn’t make logical sense and it causes you any sort of negative aspect to continually come into your life, then get rid of it. Start out small, but actually think about your problems and do the work to get rid of them.
Ask questions! Ask yourself a question and your subconscious will automatically spit out an answer. That’s why an overly self-conscious and unconfident person is so miserable. That person is always caring too much about what other people think and asking him/herself what do other people think about me or why do I suck? It’s a good thing to care about your own life and to have high expectations for yourself, but not the other way around. Happiness=Reality/Expectations. If your reality is bad, but you have high expectations, you’ll never be happy. You can never make everyone happy. If your reality is bad, but you have high expectations for yourself, then you can set goals, achieve them, and get high self-esteem. Setting small goals is the best way to
Living by your routine and the philosophy “Just Do It” is a miserable way to live. Yes, our lives do sometimes devolve to the point of nothing but routines, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Thinking is what makes us human. Socrates once said, “The suspension of thinking will lead to the downfall of the human race”. The human race can be your own individual life.
