Letting It Go

How to let go of your past and embrace your future.

Every “Guide to Happiness” or “Happiness 101″ book out there, will tell you not to worry. If you can not worry about anything, you will be the happiest person in the world. In the process of writing this post, I am worrying if I can finish my freelance project, if I can wake up on time tomorrow morning, if anyone is what I’m writing now would sound stupid, if I shouldn’t write the last line or risk sounding self-conscious. So, I’m sorry to report that it isn’t easy.

I worry about my past

I can safely say, that there are many, many things in my life which I wish I did differently. If only I had learn the piano as a kid, if only I studied harder in high school, if only I cherished my ex-girlfriend more. If only, if only, if only. If only if onlys could do a damn thing.

Let’s face it, there’s nothing anyone can do to change your past. The only thing you should ever regret is indulging in regretting itself. It does absolutely nothing. Worrying about what just happened will only cause you to react according to your emotions, and not with a sound mind. Time waits for no one. Learn, move on, don’t look back and make very sure you never repeat the mistake.

I worry about my future

Almost all sensible people do the things they do for a better future. You work to get promoted, get a pay increment and eventually increase your standard of living. You go to school to get educated and secure your position in the marketplace. Where your actions can and should be for the better future, your mind should always be in the present. A mind that’s ahead of its owner, will cause unnecessary disappointments. Are you the kind of person who will have wedding bells playing in your head when you found someone? Or the kind that looks forward to your promotions and pay increments when you’re dining with the boss? What happens if it doesn’t happen?

Just not so long ago, when an ex and I went our separate ways, it felt like my world was tumbling down. You know the kind of feeling where you go into a indestructible bomb shelter and come out only to find the whole world destroyed, you being the only survivor? I gave all the time I had to her, bought her everything she liked, talk to her about everything, thinking that as long as I am doing everything I can, I won’t lose her. What if the person you loved so deeply decided that you aren’t the right one? What if your boss leaves the company? As much as you can do to make sure things goes well, you can never say for sure that it will. You don’t know what will happen. And sometimes its better to think that you don’t need to know.

Let it go

You cannot change the past. You do not know what is going to happen in the future. The only thing you can change and know, is the present. Choose the right things to do, do them at your every best, ensuring it to be a beautiful moment. Soon, that beautiful moment will become a beautiful past, and the fruits of it will create a beautiful future, and with that you are on your way to a beautiful life.
