New Year’s Resolution: How Can We Keep That Goal to Lose Weight?

by Joann DOnofrio in Lifestyle Choices, January 4, 2008

Everyone tries to make a resolution that they can stick to and accomplish through the year. Here are my thoughts on one when you want to lose weight and increase your self-esteem.

In today’s society as many years ago many try to think up a New Year’s resolution that we can stick to. It isn’t always easy to hold to any promise is it? Whether we want to lose weight, exercise more, wake up earlier in the morning to get those last minute things done before heading to work, we always somehow lose sight of our goal. It was either that we never took the time to write down the goal and because you never saw it again by the end of the year you wonder, what was my resolution last year?

It is funny, but most of us think that way. We all have good intentions, but however good are intentions we don’t always hold to them. Finding that many goals are difficult to stick to, but finding that one, which can make you become a different or better person, is pretty easy. It is that accomplishment that you want to show off.

For example, losing weight, there are a lot of things that go along with losing weight, getting enough exercise, eating right, essentially changing your lifestyle. We learn from all these cooking shows that with a little effort you can make a healthy, quick and affordable meal all on your own. The bonus of making that meal is that you prepared it and know what you are eating. You have control over what you put in your body and how much. We know that when we go out to eat at a restaurant, the portion size is usually two times to three times the size of an actual portion.

Through our childhood years we have become so ingrained with the idea of eating everything on our plates that we simply think it would be a bad thing to not finish what is on the plate and even the thought of a doggy bag makes us cringe. Our thoughts are what if I bring this home and I never eat it, then it goes to waste. Although our parents were right in telling us to eat what is on the plate was a good idea as a child, we now know that when we go out to dine that normal portion our parents would give us is nowhere near the same amount.

Furthermore, losing weight cannot be done without being accompanied by some form of exercise. When entering any weight loss program they always try to encourage walking to help you lose the weight. The reason why they say walking is because it is the easiest exercise that can be followed with minimal stress on the body.

Walking is a very healthy work out to start off with because it puts little strain on your body, you can walk outside on a beautiful day and you can also use a treadmill on those rainy days. Even if you don’t have a treadmill, on those rainy or cold days use the steps in your house to help you get in that time that you need, walk around while talking on the phone to your best friend. Either way you stick to one form that keeps you fit as you lose the pounds.

As you master the one form of work out and become comfortable with it, you can always mix another type in with it, such as: sit ups, push ups, crunches, etc. Once you make a commitment to one style of fitness, you can then commit to working on others. So as long as you don’t put too much pressure on yourself to do so many at once you should have the results you desire.

Finally, the determination is there within you to do what you need to do and this will help you accomplish your goal. It is important to remember to focus on one objective at a time to achieve anything in life. Accept who you are, but know that you can do whatever you put your mind and heart into. The end result is your happiness with who you are.
