Procrastination: A Goal Killer

There are four steps in eliminating the delays that can frustrate our goal setting process.

They are: 1) the slowdown, 2) use your eyes, 3) the redirection and 4) action. Each is simple, but combined are an effective method for eliminating the delays of our lives. This process is unique because it is common to continue to apply this system time after time, because the habits are hard to break. Even after a long period of time, it is easy to fall to postpone again.

The first step is to take the time to slow down and mediate on the zone you’re procrastinating. Do we really achieved? What do they really feel in our hearts? Where does this fit into our goal setting process? The result here is the decision to continue or quit. With its decision to continue, we recognize that the task should be done and we’re willing to do so.

Now we use our eyes and mind to see what is happening. What’s good? What’s wrong? What distracts me? What do I want or need to change? How and when can I change things to eliminate the obstacles? This insightful view really identifies changes that may be beneficial for us. The result is a new goal setting plan, although a mild plan that can then be refined. It also helps strengthen their resolve.

This brings us to the third area of redirection. Now look at the plan smoothly in the previous step. Here we use all our knowledge to be a specific objective of establishing the plan. We decide how to achieve and perhaps create intermediate steps to get much done. The results here are both to create a concrete plan and also to strengthen our commitment to achieve it. We will become energy to achieve than we had been avoiding.

Finally, we reached what was once a wall – doing homework. At this point, we are enthusiastic, committed and have a plan of action. Now we must go out and work the plan. Because the momentum towards the fulfillment of what we created in the previous steps, this will not be as difficult as it once was. Having examined the work throughout this year, we’ve really been proving to ourselves that we must, we can and then we going to do. Those are the difficult things. This final – really doing is just the culmination of what has gone before. We use this momentum to carry us through success – We won! Goal setting has been successful.

Finally, here are some additional points. Procrastination is a recurrent phenomenon. Being easy on yourself, especially in the beginning. Old habits fight hard to maintain control. Even if you are not completely successful at first, the fact that progress has been made should feel good. As you spend more time and increase achievement, confidence and ability to quit the delay will increase. Sometimes, the forward motion is steps uneven and not all of them are facing – Sometimes we go back. But if we keep hammering the wall, the delay is equal to our persistence.
