Raves and Ravers

A short look at the “rave” scene and lifestyle.

When you think of raves you think of loud techno music, people jumping, bouncing and dancing to the beats, a foggy haze scattered with flashing and strobbing lights and of course drugs as well. You may not be far off. But there is more to it than that. The ravers are the new hippies of sorts. They have their own way of seeing things. of feelling things and of simply just being. And in all actuallity, what exactly is wrong with that?

A rave is supposed to be a positive and freeing experience that one can only truly understand after attending one. but, the ravers believe in PLUR. Peace. Love. Unity. And Respect. It is away of letting go of all the daily stresses and dramas of the times and just be for a momment. To be connected with others who feel the same way. Some see it as spiritual. Some just as a physical release of the overwheming emmotions we all face.

Ravers are usually pretty easy to spot. They have a not so standard uniform. Mainly you will find them in the biggest baggiest pants they could find, preferably light weight. The top half of them if it has anything on at all will probably start out being a hooded sweatshirt of some type when its cold. But, as the people file in and begin to dance those outer layers will come of to show tshirts and tank tops, bikini tops and bra’s. Comfortable shoes are a must at a rave. Tennis shoes of all sorts mainly. Jewelry is another big component in the raver wardrobe. “Raver Beads” small plastic or metal beads worn as bracelets or necklaces. Alot of glowing and flashing necklaces, rings, bracelets and jewelry for piercings as well. Pacifiers are also big at raves. Things like Pacifiers and lollipops help the “lock jaw” effect that drugs like exstacy have.

Drugs are unfortunately another big aspet of the rave scene. Drugs like Exstacy (MDMA) LSD, Ketamine(Special K) Cocaine and countless others run rampant in some clubs. Drugs are not a necessary part of the rave experience, please do not get me wrong when i say that. And there are groups that promote educating yourself on any drug you concider injesting before hand on not just it’s “positive” but, it overwhelmingly negative side effects as well. But, just like with the hippies of the 60’s and 70’s the ravers are widely known for their drug use at these events.

And of course there is always the music. The music at a rave is some of the most high energy sounds you will ever find. There are all kinds of genre’s of rave music. From Trance to Drum and Bass or jungle to ambient just to name a few. Generally involving synthesizers, sequencers and such. It is an aquired taste for some. Repulsive and annoying to others. And absolutely entrancing to others.
