Self Care 101

by Kaye Carter in Lifestyle Choices, November 22, 2008

As we begin to focus on the upcoming Holiday Season and the ultimate New Year’s resolution, most of us think of a few things that we neglect, but should really focus on.

Weight loss

Tried everything in the book? Don’t give up just yet. Join the local gym now so you can drop the pounds, feel great, have energy, and get healthy – for life. Enlist a friend as there is always safety in numbers. During the holiday season so many of us feel stressed and tend to pack on the unwanted pounds. Don’t wait until the New Year to begin a weight loss regimen, start today!

Wellness

Don’t wait for that dreaded diagnosis! Take charge of your health NOW!! Say “no” to high blood pressure, diabetes, allergies, cholesterol, depression, and other challenges. Make a commitment to yourself to see your doctor and not only get your annual physical exam, but to make the time to do follow-up appointments or schedule to visit specialist when recommended by your primary care physician. Request a complete profile assessment and wellness plan. Preventive care is the best medicine so become your own health care advocate.

Wisdom

Get knowledge. Knowledge is power. Gain the wisdom needed to weed through confusing and conflicting health and wellness messages. This is an integral part of all individual outlooks. Schedule time to yourself to reflect on the things that are important in your life. While doing so, set short-term and long-term goals for yourself.

Have a great Holiday Season and be Blessed!

    Kaye,

This is the second article of yours I’ve had the honor of reading, it’s undoubtably clear that writing is your calling. Health and weight really hits home with me having gone thru two very serious issues. Blood clots becasue of a knee surgery and high blood pressure, both of which I’ve been blessed to be able to overcome with medication and continued weight loss. You’re exactly right that you MUST become your own best advocate by asking questions and becoming a Good patient. So I would just like to say thank you for your endless support thru articles like this. Love you and please continue to save the world one word at a time.

Very well put and straight to the point. Being a African American male I know we tend to put off things such as physicals,
medical attention when needed. If I want to live longer to see my kids grow, its a must that I visit my physician at least annual and to start some type exercise program to keep my health up to par. Good Job.

This article hit is right on time. I think the key is also to remember is that even if you aren’t overweight, we all strive to say healthy. So it starts at home and within ourselves. KNOWLEDGE is truly wisdom.

If more people would take the time to listen to what this article is saying, alot of health problems will be prevented! It was short and straight to the point! What caught my attention was taking time to schedule for ourselves. Working individuals put this off and wind up very very stressed out.
