Self Improvement in Stages

Improving yourself always has to be on your mind. Here are a few ways of doing it gradually.

There is no real dynamism when you are in a balanced state. At the most you are trying to maintain the status quo in your life, leaving things as they are. Maybe you have got used to the present state of affairs and do not want to look at anything different. It is the same even if you are balancing yourself on one foot. Whatever energy you are expending, which may count for dynamism is totally concentrated on maintaining your equilibrium. This is like swimming against the tide. Every effort or stroke that you make in the water would enable you to stay where you are. There is very little progress.

If you want to progress in life, you need a structured format for going forward. You need to consciously achieve a rhythm in all your actions and thoughts which are constantly moving you ahead from where you are. Concentrate on one thing at a time, maybe it is your short temper, or your lack of patience, or any other aspect of your personality that you feel needs improvement. Make an effort to improve these negative traits of yours, a step at a time.

Divide your day into hours and half hours, and set yourself goals for these short periods for the improvement that you desire. Pat yourself on the back every time you successfully cross one time period. Admonish yourself if you fail. Increase the periods on subsequent days or in subsequent weeks. Do not bind yourself down to completing your first task in a set time period. Be flexible. Some ingrained character defects may take longer than others. Give yourself at least two or three weeks without a lapse into your old habits, before you consider yourself on the path to success. Then move on to the next thing that requires improvement.

Use this same technique for even the external factors that affect your life. Maybe it is the relationships that you have with your colleagues in the office. Probably it is your spending habits that make you constantly go over budget. Or is it just your lack of discipline in sticking to an exercise routine. Persist. They say it requires at least 21 days making anything into a habit. Consider this the minimum time you should carry out any self improvement technique. Or decide your own period you feel you need.

Your life style should be something you feel comfortable with. The opinion of others should only matter to you, if anything you are doing is impinging on their lives. Otherwise ignore what others say of your way of spending your days. As long as you are comfortable with it and feel in control of your life, that is all that matters. During the process of this self improvement phase in your life, people, your family members mostly, may look at you askance. Do not let this discourage or distract you in anyway. If it does, think of this distraction as a trait of yours that needs improvement, and proceed accordingly.

So go to it. Improve yourself. It will give you a lot of satisfaction if you achieve even a part of what you set out to change.
