Six Reasons Success is Hard to Achieve

Nearly everyone dreams of some form of success. People measure success by different standards as individuals and by age. Younger people have large goals that span a lifetime. Success for them means the achievement of those goals.

As people age, some of the goals of youth begin to appear as unrealistic. At some point during mid-life, most people adjust what their standard of success is from achieving goals that require a lifetime to being happy and having enough to money to live comfortably. Even at this, many people never reach the success that they want.

Success is elusive because it requires risk.

Very few people have success fall into their laps. Success almost always comes after something is attempted where failure is a real possibility. Fear of failure keeps many people from ever trying to reach for success. This fear takes different forms depending on what the expectation for success entails. For the person who wants to be rich, bankruptcy is a major concern. It brings a sense of shame and possible disgrace. Some find this level of risk unacceptable. Consequently, they settle for less than success.

Success is difficult to achieve because it demands a high degree of commitment.

It is common for success to come after years of effort and possible failures. Almost all great inventors spent decades perfecting the devices that made them famous. They had far more failures than successes. Great artists have many paintings that are covering up failures on the same canvass. Success comes to the person who continues to strive until it happens. Commitment will not always assure success, but quitting will always bring failure.

Many people do not want to do the hard work to succeed.

Not only is commitment a requirement of success, but hard work must also be a part of it. Thomas Edison said that genius was 1 percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration. This means work hard if you want to succeed. It is not just difficult manual labor that is meant. Working hard means continuing to find new ways to attempt success. Keeping track of failures so that they are not repeated is an element of this hard work.

Clear goals are needed if you want to succeed.

If you aim at nothing, you will hit it. The marksman knows where the target is and shoots at it. To succeed, you must aim your life like a gun at the success that you desire. Seeing the prize is the only way that you will stay motivated to reach what you want. Simply doing something every day is not enough. You must eliminate everything that is not directed at success. If you do not, you will waste time doing too many things that are not productive for success.

You may need to be willing to share the wealth or the limelight.

Very seldom is the ladder to success climbed by a solitary figure. Find people who can help you succeed. These people may be people of influence who can open doors that you would not have open to you otherwise. Some of them may have expertise or resources that you lack. Others may be willing to help you carry the load until you achieve success. Too many people are unwilling to share the glory in order to have success. They would rather settle for less than share.

No one succeeds if they turn loose of their dream.

Successful people learn to overcome the urge to believe it is too late to succeed. Any excuse that keeps you from trying is not for you if you intend to be successful. Being successful means that the dream may need to be modified, but never abandoned. Be willing to wade through depression, discouragement, and hardship to make the dream a reality. Success is hard, but it is ultimately worth it if the dream is a good one.
