The Positive Side of Giving Up
No one wants to be considered a quitter. But sometimes giving up is a viable option when the path we’re traveling leaves us too physically, emotionally and spiritually spent to enjoy the best aspects of our lives.
Are the goals you’re pursuing demanding a greater investment of time, energy and money than you bargained for? Is your continuous striving to achieve something weakening your relationships and undermining your life? Are you feeling pressured to follow a particular route which is contrary to your deepest desire? Are you feeling guilty for wanting to travel a different path?
Sometimes when the pressure is on and frustration and disenchanted are you daily companions, one option is to simply pack it in. You fear being ridiculed and called a quitter and so you hang on. You keep going and you keep trying. Who in their right mind would give up after they have come so far? That would be admitting failure, that the plan was flawed and the vision skewed. However, giving up is not all negative especially if it is only temporary. In fact, here are three positives you might want to consider.
Freedom
It is admirable to keep plugging away at a particular task or long term project, trying and trying and trying again to make it work, to succeed. But often regardless of how it might seem to others, holding up, stepping back and walking away may be your salvation.
If the path you’re traveling and the goals you’re pursuing are tying you up in knots internally, adversely affecting your health and jeopardizing your relationships, you must re-evaluate your motivations, your actions and even the very vision. And if necessary, you may have to hit the pause button or give up the pursuit altogether.
If you quit now, you can be free of the conflicting range of thoughts and emotions swirling internally and manifesting themselves in negative attitudes and behaviors. If you give up now, you can be free from the questions, the control and expectations of others. If you abandon this course, you will be free to consider a different path for your life: a path that is less stressful, more fulfilling and that will allow you to enjoy the journey.
What have you been trying to accomplish? In what way would you be free, if you give up now?
Empowerment
It’s not unusual to get bogged down with the work involved in pursuing certain goals. You become mired in following rules, meeting deadlines and completing tasks on your to-do lists. Instead of steering your way to the destination you want, you end up being driven by doubts about your ability and fears that you may not make it at all. These negative thoughts and feelings call the shots and you lose the power to take control of your own life and how you really want to live it day by day.
