The Real Meaning of Success

A few ideas about success.

The real meaning of success has many levels, shades and variations. It can mean personal feelings of satisfaction or it can mean recognition by the world that something worthwhile has been achieved.  Success can be huge or it can be something small.

Personal success is that sense that goes with achieving an objective, being happy, completing a difficult piece of work or making someone else feel good.  All sorts of other chaos might be happening in life but the feeling that goes with this sort of success lifts and enhances the well being of the individual. It can help the person to manage other aspects of life which may not be so successful. No one else might know about the personal success and it could be that the information is guarded jealously as a treasure.

The success recognized by the world is usually different.  Generally it means financial success but it can also mean being the Gold Olympic athlete, the winner of a writing prize or achieving a scientific breakthrough; although these successes often bring with them financial reward as well.  While they may provide a feeling of personal success they are open to the world’s judgement of what success is.

The world’s judgement of success is often simplistic and basic; the crowd response to ideals, hope and romantic ideas.  It is strongly judgmental according to how the fickle public perceive the concept.  Earn a lot of money or make it for others and the individual is accorded the accolade of success. Win the lottery and your are successful. This suggests that in the public mind success is a financial reward. Perhaps because money suggests you have the freedom to do what you want; something enviable when most people are struggling with money.

The value of success to each individual will vary, however.  This will be in tune with what that person feels is of worth. Someone who is determined to establish a charity will have a driving idea and their success will be according to how they feel this has been accomplished. This will be a personal success which might gain public recognition.  Another individual after an accident which has left them disabled might feel success because they have managed to walk again. Success for a child could be pleasing a parent.

Being recognized on a global level is satisfying at one level but it might mean a loss of privacy.  Sometimes there is a price to pay for success which is different from expectations. In this way success is both a benefit and an expense.
