The Will to Live
The will to live is the most powerful force in life. People have had spontaneous remissions from terminal diseases who were working toward a goal.
The will to live is the most powerful force there is. At any time there are many factors influencing our health. Nutrition, exercise, stress, and injuries or infections all play a part. And at some point psychological problems begin to effect our physical well being. Then comes a stressful situation and we get a full accumulation of stress that is the beginning of a real illness. For instance, you might have a family history of hypertension and suddenly a stressful event takes place and your blood pressure reaches an alarmingly high number. That you have the body makeup that predisposes you to hypertension is not the cause but it’s a big influence.

Some heart patients unconsciously formulate their own disorder as a form of death wish. Not that they wish to die but they long for release from responsibility. In worrying you can involuntarily close down the circulatory system causing angina. Also worrying can cause an excess of hydrochloric acid which predisposes a person to ulcers or even cancer. You can send unconsciousness messages to your body you don’t even know about.
The most important rule we can follow for health and longevity, perhaps even more important than diet and exercise is staying involved and curious about life. Because it so deeply involves the consciousness of the individual and the meaning you have placed on life. You have to feel your life has meaning and that it’s important to be alive.

For diet it’s important to reduce the amount of carbohydrates and white sugar. And increase the amount of roughage, fresh fruits and vegetables. Switch from processed foods to less processed, reduce intake of red meat and eat poultry, fish, whole grains. Eat more legumes for protein. Reduce alcohol and caffeine and increase drinking water.
For exercise, we require a moderate level of exercise such as walking or swimming or biking that taxes the cardiology system. Do that three or four times a week. It should be something that you enjoy doing and will be consistent with. It doesn’t matter so much what exercise you do, just do it regularly.
Make a habit of simply being quiet. Stand back and see if your life is what you wish it were. Decide what your goal in life is and work toward it. Maybe you will never get there but striving toward it is what matters. You often see spontaneous remission from disease among people working toward a goal. The will to live is to remain an active participant in life whether at work or play. Another thing is the realization that there’s something bigger than self. Not necessarily in the form of religious dogma, but in a feeling of the universal spirit, or the love of mankind. It’s nothing more than the feeling of something greater than the individual self.

Take small meditative breaks during the day if possible. If that is not possible take some time during every day for a mental break. This is necessary for the adequate functioning on a mental and a physical level. Free yourself from the feeling that rest is a waste of time. When that little voice asks: What are you doing? You should be working. Let that thought float right our of your mind. Another one will come. Treat it the same way. Learn to let it go very quickly and pretty soon it will stop nagging you. You are the master of your fate. When you make changes, ask yourself how it makes you feel. It just might make you feel terrific.

This is excellent advice. So much of the way we feel is in our minds. A positive attitude can overcome a lot of problems as well as all the peventatives you mention here. Good work.

Excellent, Ruby. The power of the mind can be very encouraging when it comes to fighting illness. I myself have suffered 3 heart attacks, by-pass surgery and half my heart is technically dead…yet what keeps me going is knowing without me my little boy is naked. For me, that thought pushes any illness I suffer and it is terminal, to the back of my mind and keeps my heart beating every single day. So, great write up and good tips for others. X

We must be sure that people have something to look forward to so that they can maintain the will to want to live. If all they have to look forward to is more poverty around the globe….then we are in trouble.

Fantastic work Ruby! I think you are completely right! There are a lot of factors when concerning illness but I think that a lot of the time we do bring it upon ourselves. If we do not take care of ourselves for starters as mentioned above in diet and activity that is a sure fire way to become ill!

Wonderfully inspiring article. Intuitively correct. Thumbs up!
On a (albeit vaguely) related note, I just wrote up an article on marijuana legislation/legalization of marijuana/medical marijuana etc. effecting the patients hoping for these remissions.
If you’re interested, give it a glance and let me know what you think.
Great read!

We all have three stages in life
The first stage is
When we all move about
On our own Free- Will
The second stage makes us
Move with our Will power
And the third stage
Depends on the Will
We are able to write.

Ruby Great Article ! I have seen this in my own family. A Few years ago my mother got very sick at the same time I became pregnant for my daughter. The night I gave birth my mothers health seemed to start getting better. That was the first day she was able to keep food down and move around with out feeling deathly sick. I have always said happyness is a state of mind and worry is a waste of time that changes nothing. A+ article keep up the good work!

For the past several months I have been trying to help myself. I have been trying to fight this desire to give up, I have been trying to find reasons to live. I have sat here and cut out atleast 100 motivational quotations and posted them all around me. I have tried eating healthier, exercising, listening to the news (because I have realized that there’s something bigger than self).
Of all the articles/self-help/motivational sites I have come across, I think your article sums it up best. It’s the desire to live. If you don’t have that, everything goes downhill (including your health).
But how do you acquire that will to live? What if it has slowly been creeping out of you for the last several years and then a recent event in your life was like the last straw – the one where your world came crumbling down? What if every day since that event, your mind has been a battlefield between the will to survive and the tensions of your soul?
What if you have realized that you’ve wasted so many years of your life by keeping yourself sheltered. BY NOT staying involved and curious about life. ’sexyme’ is right … there are stages in life. But what if you didn’t successfully make it past that first stage … where you move about on your own free-will? It’s the stage of exploration. But what if you didn’t have that freedom … what if you were suppressed?
How do you go about discovering yourself? If you don’t know who you are, and what you want, how do you know where you want to go in life? How do you have a will to survive if you do not know where you want to go because you cannot express free-will?
How do you get out of this mess?
