Viva La Difference

An essay about living the different life.

Imagine a world where everyone was alike. Wearing the same clothes, styling their hair in the same way, speaking like their favourite celebrity, or acting like their idol. Too many people conform to what others want or tell them to – and it makes you less of an individual. The points to be discussed are stereotyping, individuality, and a world where everyone is alike.

Stereotyping or to stereotype is to take the most obvious feature of someone and assume that they are like another cluster of people with the same feature. For example; if someone dyed their hair black with a blonde streak and put a bow tie in it, someone could look at them and put them in the ‘scene’ category. To not judge a book by its’ cover is also like stereotyping. You hear stories about people judging others because of what they look like, or how they speak. Maybe it has happened to you, or maybe it has happened to someone you are close to.

What it means to be individual is speaking for yourself, not letting others tell you what to do, not giving in to peer pressure, not conforming, and not trying to be like anyone else. Individuality is fairly un-common now-a-days because so many people choose to conform to peer pressure or the latest fads and trends. If you choose to conform to something you would not normally do it is not very individual. An example of individuality would be like being a granny smith apple on a tree of royal galas.

Imagine a world full of people who all dressed the same, all had the same haircuts, all got fake tans, all had the same piercings, all spoke in da same kool az way bro, and all acted in the same un-worldly way – just to look like Paris Hilton. It is not every day that you see all of the men in the world wearing blonde wigs, bikinis, hot pink sunglasses, and a small dog in a manbag. Sooner or later, that is what this earth will circum to – everyone will want to be like their favourite celebrity, just because they get peer pressured into being someone they are not. Technically, none of us are individuals. After all, we are all human – which is one thing some one cannot help. We cannot not be humans, unless we have some brand spanking new surgery that changes what we are. Even thought we cannot help being human, we can change who we are – which is conforming to being someone you are not. To be individual you should be yourself, not who others want you to be.

Be yourself. Don’t change for anyone. Many people get peer pressured into being someone that they are not. Stereotyping, individuality, and a world where everyone is the same are three ways to teach you how to live the difference.
