Ways to Beat Being Too Independent
You can not be forever alone in your life. Remember that we are a social being.
If you feel isolated and lonely because you are too independent, that is easy to change, says UCLA psychology professor Gary Emery. “There are many reasons why people become too independent – and fear is the root of it,” he explained.
Others fear friends might try to control them; they also fear that they will be hurt if they allow other people to get too close to them. In situation like this, the first thing to do is to recognize that you have a problem, says Dr. Emery, who is also the author of “Own Your Own Life.”
If you are too independent, he said, you should follow these tips:
- Try to meet at least one new person each day and spend a few moments talking to that person. This will help break down the barriers you have built around you.
- Offer to help one person each day – even if it’s just opening a door at a grocery
- Ask help from others even if you think you do not need it. This way you will realize that not everyone is out there to take advantage of you.
- Open up to new friends. Talk about your in-depth feelings; exposing confidences and making yourself vulnerable will make you more approachable and comfortable.
- Share the credit for accomplishments. You will win friends as you earn reputation for fairness, confidence and generosity.

It would be nice for you to include your original sources from which you derived this information. Students, such as myself, cannot use this material without an author’s name or information regarding the original (printed) source.

To Nick, please read the article again. I have mentioned Gary Emery as a source. This article was not derived from any original source. It is a product of research. Thank you.
Ronald, thank you for passing this article to someone else. Will try to write more about this topic. To Frugalosity, I am glad with your comments. Thanks.
