What is Normal?

by Carol M Creasey in Lifestyle Choices, December 7, 2008

My thoughts about the word normal.

The word normal is supposed to describe an average every day person, but do they exist? Every single one of us is unique in our own way, which is a big part of who we are. We all vary in levels of intelligence, looks, personality, and outlook on life. Some people are hard workers, some are not, some of us have ambition, and some lack confidence needed to fulfil their ambtions.

It is not unusual to see someone who looks very like someone you know, or a celebrity. These lookalikes to celebrities can actually earn money from this. To look like someone visually is the easy part, it’s the looks you were born with, but it’s your character that would set you apart, because that is what makes us all individual.

Even identical twins  have different characters, which makes it easier for others to tell them apart.  As siblings they are are usually very close, but they still have their own unique character.

If you go to see your child’s teacher on open day and you ask the dreaded question. How bright is my child? The teacher will probably answer in a roundabout way  by pointing out the strengths and weaknesses of your offspring. Whether they are  below average in intelligence, “normal,” or superbright, each person has their own unique set of talents.

During my life I have met a person who had a University degree, he was in fact so bright that everything he said went over my head. However, he was totally unable to fend for himself in the real world, and stayed at home living with his parents.

He had a sister, who was only classed as average at school, but she grew up with a keen interest in making a way for herself in life. She went to work in a bank, and through sheer determination worked her way up to a responsible and highly paid position.

I know a young man who has been autistic since the day he was born. He loves to watch quiz programmes, and the astonishing thing is he knows all the answers, and is also particularly good at Maths. If he ever went on one, I’m sure he could make himself a millionaire.

All these examples are people who have their own set of talents, but how you get on in life is decided by how you use your talents. Some people are very musical, and some are very talented athletes. If you put all this together to make one person who is considered as “normal” it is just an average. I wouldn’t say anyone is normal, we are all our own complex person, and we are all different to one another. Thank goodness we are, because that certainly makes life more interesting.
