What It Really Means to “Love the Skin You’re In”

Loving yourself is just as important as loving others, but sometimes, we look in the mirror and see something we just don’t like.

Loving who you are or who you will become is not always easy, because the road to self-respect is a rough one.  Those of us who take a look in the mirror don’t always like what we see, so we think about all of the things that we are not, instead of the things that we are.  No, we can’t all be perfect.  In truth, there is no perfection, because everything has flaws.  The things that don’t are fake, or man-made, in our search for perfection.  It is this search that drives us to dislike our appearences.

The first step to realizing how beautiful you really are is to take a look at the people around you.  Look at your friends, your comrades, your work buddies, even your enemies or the people you don’t quite get along with.  Ask yourself why you are friends with these people, or ask yourself why you aren’t friends with these people.  You’ll find that the answers can be unclear, especially if you hang out in groups of people that you want to be like, called “cliques.”  Cliques are an insecure person’s best friend and worst enemy at the same time.  You hang out with these people not because to like them, but because you want to fit in.  Remove yourself from this kind of group and find out who your real friends are.  You’ll be surprised that those people in the clique are just like you; they just want to fit in.  You may even find that the people aren’t what you thought they were, and way turn out to have been not-so-nice people to hang around with.  Remember; popularity is nothing compared to having friends that really care about you.

Another reason why people downsize themselves is because they look in the mirror too much.  Yes, this sounds a little odd, but it’s true.  Looking at yourself too often makes you more likely to focus on the things that are displeaing to you, rather than the things that should make you glad that you are an individual.  There is nothing wrong with looking in the mirror, but looking too often can lead to constant changing of clothes, over-accessorizing to hide yourself, or even addictions to substances that make you lose weight, tighten your skin, or just make you feel better about yourself.  These are things that we need to stay away from, so please, for your own health, stop looking at all of your faults and start looking at the things that make you an individual.

It isn’t healthy to worry about your appearance all the time.  You could end up losing too much weight or becoming malnourished, just to have that beach-babe body.  True, you look beautiful, but you’ve lost a lot of the things that also make you you.  Are you still as beautiful on the inside as you are on the outside?  Or have you lost that too in your lust for outer beauty?  Beauty is only skin deep, and it’s true.  Eventually, that beauty will fade with age, and all of your hard work will have gone to waste.  I’m not telling you not to lose weight, but try to do it as naturally as possible, because the more chemicals that you put inside of you, the more it deteriorates your insides and clouds your mind.  Be careful of what you do, because in the end, you only have yourself to blame for any misfortunes that befall you.  There are no accidents.
