Who are You?
This short stream of consciousness is the wake up call each of us needs to read. It’s a reminder of getting back the life that the rat race takes away.
The problem is remembering who we are. We are our jobs in most cases. Our job defines what kind of person we are. The accountant is dull or repressed. The taxi driver is uneducated, unrefined, even though many are quite the contrary. The teacher is intelligent and communicates effectively…well, you get the picture. The problem with defining ourselves though our positions in the workforce is that we tend to revolve our lives around the necessity of work, and in turn money, to support our commercial life. We make it, we spend it, and so, we maintain who we are. But who are you really is the question I ask myself when I look in the mirror.
I’ve been a stay-at-home mom for two years, and I still have trouble seeing who I am.
I am a mother-that’s my job now, as it will be for the rest of my life, but what I’ve realized is that our society does not recognize my job as a contributing force in maintaining the “cycle”. So I’ve been digging deep and I see what has been lost within my life and the lives of friends and family around me. Themselves. The older we get, the more we want to become part of the competition. We want the degrees so we can get the cars, the houses, the “things” that make us feel grounded and socially presentable. To get these things many people have to sacrifice time doing the things they love, time spent with children and family, and time spent learning new things and living life.
Why do we spend so much time in front of the T.V.? Why are we unhappy when we supposedly have all the things we should need to have the perfect life? Because in sacrificing all the things that really matter, we sacrifice our very being, and give ourselves up for slaughter in order to maintain this current trend we call our lifestyle. How do we fix it? We can get the things we want, but we have to come full circle, before we retire and realize that we did nothing but make a buck in our lives. We need to look back into our childhoods and remember our passions. We need to rediscover ourselves again. Is this just more sacrificing -more time from those we love? Yes perhaps, but it’s sacrificing the fear of not knowing who you really are.
