Why Should I Try to Fit In?

Why should we try to adjust ourselves within our society? About the idea of having complete freedom. How is it possible to have complete freedom? Or is it at all possible?

What is it with women these days? Well I ask what is it with people, in general, these days? Why are women always being asked these questions? Why are women being subjected to a particular mould, be it being the mould of a housewife or a liberated woman or a feminist… Why are there always moulds to fit into? Is it wrong for a woman to be a housewife and yet have a dream to be able to develop a career someday or is it too unthinkable for an ideal housewife to think about anything other than her husband and kids.

And for that matter, if thought objectively, it is not just a woman who is expected to fit into moulds. It is all humans. The so-called society, defined by the people we keep company with, not necessarily the people we love. These are the people that do the job of manufacturing a certain stereotype, a mould and then all the people are expected to fit themselves into that mould. It does not matter whether you have to break away a few things or polish away or glue together some parts of yourself but you won’t be accepted unless you fit yourself into that mould. And the humour in the whole thing is that we are the people who manufacture those moulds and we are the people who can’t keep up with our own products.

Wouldn’t it be great if we would not have to follow any stereotypes. Complete freedom, as some may call it. But is that actually possible? Is it really possible for us to have complete freedom? Everybody talks about people trying to fit in and peer pressure and all such very deeply philosophical matters. What should be done to attain a state where people are free to express themselves? These are the questions that intelligent and free minded people ask and even attempt to answer. However, what I ask is that is it really possible to answer this question or that is there a real solution to this problem? Or more importantly is this really the problem?

If we would think for a moment, is there really a state of complete freedom or is it simply something that we have made up to satisfy ourselves that there is some purpose to this futile life and the purpose is to achieve complete freedom. But if there was complete freedom for people then well, this world would become a mess.

Why do humans consider themselves so intelligent that they know more than the intelligent being who created this entire universe. If even He laid out certain rules which not only does He follow but also does His creation follow. Then who are these measly humans who have not yet deciphered themselves, to question the “moulds” and rules that are imposed upon them.

It is true, however that there are some moulds that need to be broken. But as always we are in the habit of generalising. Not all moulds are meant to be broken. There are some that indeed need to be in place to keep this world together for a little while longer and enjoy our stay here. So well the root of the matter is that while breaking free seems to be an adventurous romantic thought, it better remain one.
