@J. And you think that using toilet paper will prevent the bacteria passing to your hand? Of course you won't be able to wipe yourself without touching the sorroundings (the butt cheeks), which would lead the bacteria passing to your hand. It is much better if you clean yourself with WATER and THEN clean your hand thoroughly.
It is not such a bad thing to admit that other cultures might be better sometimes on some issues than the western culture.

"..After all, if they feel their ass is squeaky clean, why bother washing their hands which they also must think are squeaky clean?
You know, there’s a reason myself and people I know almost always get sick in India."

^ Above is one good point

I'm tired of STUPID METAPHORS that miss the point and highlight some other aspect of a problem.. metaphors are sometimes useful approximations for helping to understand something, not the final truth in themselves.

#Excellentvision
For example, the whole MUD METAPHOR about would you rather wash muddy hands with water vs wipe them with paper misses a very critical point. Just because your hands may feel cleaner with the mud rinsed off with water, doesn't mean they're really that much cleaner when it comes to residual bacteria. If there was dangerous bacteria in the mud, many times it will still be on your hands! And then YOU COMPARE IT TO THE WRONG SCENARIO. You shouldn't be talking about getting muddy hands and wiping with paper, because with the actual bathroom scenario the paper alternative doesn't involve your hands! It's talking about wiping your butt with paper, not your hands. A silly metaphor missing/skewing the point again!

#Kamrul
Again a dumb metaphor that misses the point. We're arguing about one vs the other in real life. The whole pool scenario probably constitutes a very small portion of most peoples' lives. More relevant and common interactions include shaking hands, wiping your face with your hand, rubbing your eyes, cooking, sitting, standing, walking, running, etc. Taking a pool example, saying that one is better than the other in that limited example, and then concluding that hence the same option is always better, is plain STUPID. Learn how to think clearly!

Just because you run water over something and can't see anything doesn't mean it's clean. BASIC SCIENCE. It may look clean, but most of the bacteria is still there. And let me tell you, here in Mumbai I am very often coming across restrooms that have no soap. These guys literally cook food with dirty hands and yes, you do get sick on occasion when you're body is not used to this.

The choice boils down to: Do you want to have a left hand that is dirty (which people Asian countries rarely notice because their immune systems are already accustomed to being around these things) and not best suited for shaking hands, eating with, etc.. Or do you want the inside of your butt cheeks to not be thoroughly clean.

I prefer being able to use my left hand and not worry about other peoples' left hands as well at the expense of a having dirtier underwear, and swimming in potentially dirtier swimming pools.

Enough dissing Americans just because you love to defend your culture at all costs. And enough thinking that just because you can't see something that it's not there (our perception of the world is always biased, in particular towards scientific truths)

I have two technical questions about doing the personal hygiene "the asian way".
1. What do you propose to do in the public toilets in western countries, where there is no no tap with water in the cubicle? (Please do not say to use the water directly from the toilet as suggested by someone previously!)
2. How do you get dry? It`s not always a hot weather outside. You can`t just put your clothes on when you are all wet.

I was searching the net looking for reasons why in western countries they don\'t use water in toilets, and I found my self reading this page about the opposite discussion!
Yes, if you compare these two methods -- apart from how you think about people\'s religion and color! --, it\'s obvious that cleaning some dirt with water, is more effective than just \'rubbing\' it with some piece of paper!

Also note that, not only those people using water definitely wash their hands with water soap after toilet, but also you don\'t really need to use your hand; you can just use some pipe with more water pressure! (although washing hands after toilet is necessary again).

AND, in most of the places I know (at least here in Iran), people do use paper AFTER using water, to remove the remaining wet from their body!

You just have to try it for a month, and after that you can never walk with a only-rubbed-with-paper bottom.

The question here people, is... What if they DON'T wash their hands? Some public toilets neither have SOAP neither do they have TOILET PAPER. Some people are just too gross and walk around with dirty hands, and worst part of it is, You shake your hands with them! I'm thinking of wearing Mickey Mouse gloves and then shake hands with people! The lesson learnt people is, USE GLOVES FOR HAND SHAKING!

I think it's super gross to wipe your butt with toilet paper after pooping. Maybe people brought up this way don't feel gross, but I was raised to wash every time, and believe me, the few times I have just "wiped" I felt disgusting, dirty, and uncomfortable...not to mention itchy. Hence, I will always wash. Also, for those of you wondering what people do in public restrooms, they just don't poop. Honestly ever thought about the practice of pooping in the morning and not overeating during the day so that you don't have to go in the middle of the day? I am also amazed by the absolute stupid logic of people who wouldn't shake hands with people who wash instead of wipe...if a person is going to take the time to wash their ass with water AND soap, why the hell wouldn't they wash their hands with soap as well? It would just defeat the purpose of the hygiene they are trying to achieve. Also, from the comments I could tell that it isn't only people from India who wash, but rather from all over Asia and the Middle East, which is very heartening to know...If I get married, and my husband didn't already do so, I would make him start the habit of washing.
