15 Things Men Say That They Would Do If They Could

by R J Evans in Men, August 26, 2009

But then they will most likely chicken out when they are given just that opportunity. What do you say you would do if you could but then wouldn’t because you would just have to roll over and play chicken? Mix your metaphors? Let’s go for some of the usual suspects – and don’t forget to have your say too.

You’ve heard it all before, the testosterone fuelled boast that, hell yeah, if they were just given the chance they could do that. Plus they would make a great job of it too – much better than most. Of course it is mostly to impress women but does it?

  1. Go to War

You may have heard some of the guys at work say how they would love to just get over to Afghanistan and kick some Taliban butt. Well, guys, there is thing called the army. A few clicks of the mouse and you can find their website. The pay is really good and you get to meet all sorts of interesting people too. No? Good job that conscription is a thing of the past in most countries! So, perhaps not then, after all. Men may play the game, but women know the score.

  2. Become a Stunt Man

There you are watching the TV and he says that looks easy enough, I bet I could do that. Well, given the opportunity, would he? After a few years of training and a good look at the fatality list would he really become a stunt man? Unlikely. The words of Kathleen Mifsud resonate here – ‘Men are like a fine wine. They all start out like grapes, and it’s our job to stomp on them and keep them in the dark until they mature into something you’d like to have dinner with.’

  3. Be an Arborist

Things look easy enough when experts do it because, well, they are the experts. Many men, however, see an expert doing something with ease and assume that it is easy. Men and skills are diametrically opposed. Skills are hard to get but easy to keep. Remember, ladies, that you cannot teach a man anything. You have to help him to discover it in himself. And sometimes it is good to fail. Or is that fall? Pride usually comes before both.

  4. Execute a Criminal

The death penalty is outlawed in many countries. In those in which it is – and even those that it isn’t to be honest – there are many men of the hand ‘em high persuasion who say that they would not flinch to execute a criminal. Would they, however, if given the chance to pull the lever or the switch, swing the axe or let loose the blade? Possibly not. Perhaps men just like to see justice done swiftly. After all, a man will forget but never forgive – a woman will do the opposite. What men sometimes forget though, is that when they point a finger at someone else, the four other digits are pointing right back at themselves.

  5. Sky Dive

A lot of men would do this, to be fair. But from this high? Joseph Kittinger did it and set the record for a skydive from 102,800 feet. Some men might say yes to this, but ultimately a great many would chicken out. And who could blame them? A philosopher once said that a wise man does not grieve for the things that he cannot do but rejoices in those things that he can.

  6. Use an Ejector Seat

There is a little bit of James Bond in every man (mostly the alcohol related activities) but the likelihoods are that anyone would be both shaken and stirred if they had a go at ejecting out of a car. File under ‘would love to have a go but have far too much sense’ perhaps?

  7. Go for a Space Walk

No, no, no, no, no. No!

  8. Deploy Vertically

God gave man a penis and a brain. Unfortunately, there isn’t enough blood to work both organs at the same time. Most men would deploy their brain if offered the opportunity to do this. It looks a good a way as any to commit suicide and men have a propensity for the foolhardy. After all as Linda Ellerbee once said ‘If men can run the world, why can’t they stop wearing neckties? How intelligent is it to start the day by tying a little noose around your neck?’

  9. Go Over a Waterfall in a Barrel

  10. Get in the Ring with a Professional Boxer

‘Knocked out in the first round, he was. I could have done better myself.’ So, go on then. Mr Tyson, could you come over here for a second please?

  11. Breathe Fire

Leave this one to the ladies, gentlemen.

  12. Work Up High

Again, some people make things look terribly easy but when you have to do it yourself, it seems to get a lot more difficult. Isn’t it strange how you often see smart men with dumb women but hardly ever the other way around? Go figure!

  13. Chase a Tornado

It seems pretty easy in all of those Hollywood films. You just find a bridge, get under it, strap yourself down and the twister will pass over, leaving you unscathed. Or possibly not. Only the most foolhardy would ever do this, surely? Some men thing they are indestructible. Take it away, Roseanne. She once said ‘A guy is a lump like a doughnut. So, first you gotta get rid of all the stuff his mom did to him. And then you gotta get rid of all that macho crap that they pick up from beer commercials. And then there’s my personal favorite, the male ego.’

  14. Free Run

You thought he was real for a second, didn’t you?

  15. Run With the Bulls

The real reason that I wrote this article was in response to a fellow online writer. They maintained they copyright free images were necessarily of lesser quality that those that were copyright their owners. I wanted to prove him wrong. All but two of these pictures are from Wikipedia Commons, the other two from Flickr Creative Commons. Do I win? Do I win?

    Men, huh?

OK, guys. Over to you – and be honest. What have you said that you would do but then would play chicken if given the opportunity? Remember, keep it clean (right!).

Men really want to do these things? OK, guys, we may PRETEND to be impressed when you say that, but believe me, we are SO not. And I don’t think any woman dreams of her husband (boyfriend, lover, etc) getting up one morning and saying, “Honey, I decided to finally do it! Yes, I will risk life and limb, leave my family and be an arborist out in the woods.”

Good article. I had a friend who desperately wanted to be a stuntman. After he got a splinter and was practically in tears, I pointed out that this might not be a good career choice!

Funny but i guess a word i missing from your title:
“15 Things (stupid) Men Say That They Would Do If They Could”.
I prefer to run away from such persons that most time are talking about how they can do everything… :)

Always wanted to drive straight across the US from NYC to SF only stopping for gas, food and nature calls. Asked a former GF if she wanted to do this with me and she just looked at me. Have driven straight through from NYC to Minneapolis and St. Louis at different times and drove around Alaska for 18 hours straight hours one summer when the sun wouldn’t set but as you get older you get less inclined to do crazy things.

Well…I once thought it would be cool to go into space.

But after a ride on a roller coaster this summer, I got to thinking I probably wouldn’t want to.

Skydiving too. I’ve wanted to do that for a long time. But I like being firmly on the ground.

  28. Earl Schmegley

    On August 27, 2009 at 6:32 pm

A lot of that stuff isn’t stuff a man would say he’d do – it’s stuff an idiotic man would say he’d do. I don’t consider myself to be an idiot, so a lot of that stuff I would never say I would do in the first place. As you can see from your pictures though, a lot of men do participate in those asenine activities. In addition to being men, those people are also idiots! But keep in mind there are plenty of female idiots as well. Idiocy does not discriminate based on gender.

Most of these things I would not do. Go to war, yes, if my counrty needed me. I did enlist during a war BTW. Become a stuntman, arborist (insert the rest of the “exciting jobs”) Not interested. I would absolutley 100% love to go on a space walk! Work up high been there and done that. Go over a falls in a barrell? Why? Ring with a boxer, what would that prove, he would beat my ass like nothing, Run with the bulls? Again why?

An ecclectic list of “macho” things.

Hee, Hee, Hee. Yeah, I have to admit that I tried sky diving and have a metal plate to prove it. Some of the others look like a lot of fun, but I am getting way to old to seriously think that I would do them any more! It is amazing how as you get older, the sense of self-preservation starts to kick in a bit more.
