Guidelines in Grooming
Dos and don’ts in grooming.
Dos in Grooming
Daily or sometimes twice-daily baths or showers should be routine for you and a good shampoo should be used when bathing. No cologne or powder can possibly cover the need of thorough daily cleansing.
If perspiration is excessive enough to stain your suit under the arm, you should recourse to any of the commercially available deodorants and / or anti-perspirant.
Use any of the restrained simple cologne and toilet waters of the spicy variety of the muted scents rather than the violent odors in any popular hair tonics and lotions. The use of such product increases the impression of careful grooming.
Keep nails clean and short with cuticle pushed back. Otherwise, have them professionally manicured.
Have clean, fresh and well-pressed shirt, underwear, socks and handkerchief daily.
Always keep your shoes well shined and their heel in good order.
Don’ts in Grooming
Never use cologne or perfume to hide odor body.
Don’t allow your hair to get shaggy.
Never wear the same underwear or socks on the 2nd day.
Never wear a suit the 2nd day without having it pressed, unless it is of a material which shakes out overnight.
Don’t get the wrong idea that expensive clothes are what make a well-dressed person.
Don’t wear contrasting colors if you want to give an illusion of more height or length.
Don’t wear clothes you don’t feel comfortable with. You feel secure and self-assured when you feel important. They should be comfortable sitting, standing and moving around with.
A large figure should avoid prints and designs in clothes because they tend to add bulk to the figure and to enlarge the area they cover.
A heavy person should not use soft and shiny fabrics for his clothes. Soft fabrics tend to reveal more of the silhouette while stiffer fabrics tend to reveal less of it. Shiny fabrics are enlarging while dull ones minimize the size of the figure.
A man’s suit should avoid being too distinctive in pattern, fabric or color unless he has a tremendous wardrobe from which to draw. Too assertive suits, too vibrant plaid, too broadly striped one, a very pale color or a check that doesn’t fade into gray at a short distance, or too shaggy a tweed – telescopes your wardrobe.
Don’t buy shirts on an impulse. Be careful to have shirts coordinated with your suits. Choose conservative colors.
Ties and other accessories should be conservative tones and easily coordinated. Don’t choose contrasting, or too bold color for your accessories.
