Parental Alienation

When one parent is overly critical of the other parent at the children’s expense.

Everybody remembers Tom Cruise’s harsh criticism of the psychiatry profession while being interviewed by Matt Lauer. Cruise is a scientologist and “all good scientologists” excoriate psychiatry at every opportunity. Note that religious affiliations like Methodist and Catholic merit capitalization but scientology does not make the cut!

Irrespective of the pot shots taken at L Ron Hubbard’s scientology cult, I have to agree with Tom Cruise in general about the ineffectiveness of Psychiatry. I don’t trust a professional who uses big words to describe mental illnesses and charges you big bucks to make those big words go away!

In Lindsay Lyon’s excellent US News and World Report article titled Broken Bond: When a Child Hates a Parent, she informs us that some mental health experts think parental alienation should be an official diagnosis. Ms. Lyons cites an example of a mother who taught her daughter to fear her father! The girl’s mother persuaded her to lie during a custody hearing when the couple was divorced. The girl told the judge that her father was physically abusive. The father had never been physically abusive, but because of the mother’s lies and brainwashing attempts, the girl thought her father could become physically abusive!

In my view the mother should be punished severely for potentially permanently damaging her daughter’s relationship with her father. The mother’s statements were libelous and she should be legally reprimanded. Lyon’s article did not reveal the outcome of any ensuing litigation.

Making parental alienation an official diagnosis would only serve those who get paid to make the diagnosis and then rake in more cash to treat it.
