You’re Not a Man nor a Woman Until You Learn How to Cook!

Definitions give meaning to our lives and create a sense of order, but what happens when the definitions of man and woman change?

Long gone are the macho days when men worked and women stayed home to cook, clean and raise the children. Although there are still people who expect men to be men and women to be women, these people remain the minority and are dying breed.

For the couple that has not figured out a teamwork approach to the challenges of life, a simple chore like preparing dinner could result in a lot of stress. The man may believe the woman should prepare meals and a woman who has been at work could expect dinner at the end of a long day. When people assume to know the roles of others, tasks and responsibilities get left out and stress becomes a major issue in life resulting in heated discussions, arguments or even failed relationships.

Today it takes two incomes just to make ends meet so the lines between men and women’s roles have been blurred. The blurring of the distinction between men and women’s roles is a good and bad thing; good because if a couple works together, the teamwork will payoff. On the other hand, it could split the couple because although the roles have been blurred, the male and female expectations of the opposite sex have not changed at the same rate as necessity.

It will take years for people’s attitudes to catch up to the needs of life, so while it use to be the norm for the woman to stay home and the man to be the breadwinner, economics of life has changed and the challenges we face daily will continue to transform our relationships with others which will then affect our inner-selves.
