Aircraft Carrier, Part Four

Part four on aircraft carriers.

After the war, aircraft carriers were enlarged and improved by the U.S., British, and Australian navies. Carriers could now launch many more jet planes and helicopters. The Soviet Union developed its carrier fleet in the 1960s and 1970s. Today, the U.S. has the most powerful carriers in the world.

The U.S. Navy has built four nuclear-powered attack aircraft carriers: the Enterprise, Nimitz, Eisenhower and Carl Vinson. The Nimitz is one of the world’s largest warships in displacement tonnage. It displaces (occupies) 93,400 long tons of water when fully loaded.

The Nimitz is 1,092 feet long. The deck where the airplanes take off and land is 254 feet wide. In combat or on patrol duty, the Nimitz carries about 5,700 crew members and 95 jet fighters. It can also launch long-range jet bombers armed with atomic bombs.
