In July India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh held a ceremony on the south coast of India launching its first nuclear powered submarine.

Entirely build on India soil but India had the backing of Russia. A second sub is due to be launched shortly.

Over the next few years it will be tested before its deployed. The Sea of Bengal will be its home for some time while extensive testing is done on the sub. This sub is capable of launching ballistic missiles at targets over 400 miles away.

Until now only five countries had the ability to construct such a submarine. Now India takes its place as number six. India’s Prime Minister stated that building this sub was not meant to target any country but with the waters surrounding India need to be protected.

Nuclear Submarines will also add a third dimensional aspect to India’s defense. Once launched the Arihant the name of this new power means destroyer of enemies. This new submarine will hold about 100 sailors and also will be armed with ballistic missiles. It can also stay submerged for long periods of time making this new technology almost undetectable.

It has been said it may take India three to five years to complete its testing before this new technology is introduced into the Indian Navy.

The image presented is of the U.S. Navy-owned DSV (Deep Submergence Vehicle) “ALVIN” and has nothing to do with nuclear nor India.
ALVIN is noteworthy as being the world\’s oldest research submergence vehicle, and is dedicated to peaceful scientific exploration.
