Operation Home Front (365 Days in The Life of a Soldier)
After watching the Hurt Locker this weekend I decided to write this.
The United States has already lost one war, because they were in a land they knew nothing about. How do you fight something you can’t see? These men are in unfamiliar territories and they are completely unprepared for the dangers that lie ahead, I don’t care how much training they’ve had, these people have the advantage in Iraqi because they
know their own country like the back of their hands, all the United States is doing is stumbling through the dark. I applaud these men who are willing to die for the sake of their country, they’re willing to fight a war that they never started. How much longer will these men have to jeopardize their lives for the sake of what? Will someone please answer me. I am the voice of the families that sits at home anxiously awaiting the arrival of their husbands and sons which they have been deprived of each these hero’s are deployed to do a tour of duty.
I have taken an oath and
I am sworn to protect my country,
even though I am a long way from my family,
to the red, white and blue, I have a duty to
perform and I will see it through.
Day 1
I have arrived at my destination
traveling in my Humvee I must approach
the situation with caution and hesitation.
This is not the way I expected it to be,
locations all look the same on the map.
I am sure if we stay together I will avoid
any hidden traps.
**********************************
Day 2
All is quiet here, situated with canteen
in hand, dead smack in the middle of
no where, how do we defeat the enemy in this
unfamiliar territory? I look upon my men’s faces,
signs of exhaustion, camouflage mask their
pain and worry.
**********************************
Bullets start flying we’re in the mist of
a sniper attack, running out of ammunition
this is no way to cover my men’s back.
***********************************
Day 3
The body count is rising, I don’t know
if I am ready for any more of the enemies
surprises. This is definitely dark territory,
even though the sun blazes on us in
broad daylight, my men are depleted and
I don’t think that we will last another night.
Just 362 more days and I’ll be on that next flight.
*******************************
Day 365
Finally I can’t wait to get home, sit at
the table with my family. I won’t have
to deal with that clutching feeling, you
know the kind you get when you are
all alone.
********************************
Okay fellows be safe, I gotta run, so long,
I’ll miss, kaboom. Those were the last
words he spoke and barely completed,
as he took his last breath. When the smoke
cleared the men rushed over, all they found
was his helmet. Instead of him being on
permanent leave, his loved ones go through
the remains of his Hurt Locker, there wasn’t
anything of importance there, the most
valuable thing he left behind is his family
to grieve.

I hope they stay safe, but they should not have been sent there.

It grieves me to think that our young men and women are fighting an unecessary war that they cannot win.

Your life belongs to the military when you sign the dotted line and take the oath. There’s no turning back or changing of minds later.
At least people at home should support the troops and give them hope to come home to. That’s the least you can do. Brilliant write up .

Well written piece, DP.
It would seem that the U.S. has got itself embroiled in yet another unwinnable war. As Winston Churchill once said: The one thing we learn from history is that we learn NOTHING from history.
