Radio Controlled Bullets

New cutting edge technology in weapons. Today’s topic: Radio Controlled Bullets.

No, this isn’t directing where you want the bullet to go. This is a rifle and munition that allows you to choose when it should explode, this new technology coming out of the US has been named the XM25 Rifle and is showing some promises towards taking out snipers and other hidden enemies. Basically like a grenade you launch it at the object and it explodes, but the scenario is there’s a man hiding behind a barrier, you need to kill him. Shoot it over top of the barrier and when it’s just over his head it goes boom. That’s one enemy down.

The way it works is a laser calculates the distance to the obstruction (in this case the barrier) and then the soldier can add or subtract up to three metres, allowing it to explode before or after it passes the obstruction.

The scenario the makers gave was this:

The rifle would allow a soldier faced with a sniper firing from a window to take a distance measurement to the window, add a metre, fire through the window, and have the round detonate 1 metre inside the room. The same method could be used to fire behind a wall or over a trench.

Plus it won’t cost much money, a Javelin Missile costs $70,000 while one of these rounds costs $25. In fact you could fire these rounds 2,800 times before you rack up $70,000 worth of them. A pretty big difference if you ask me, and in today’s economy it will definitely help.
