Return to Arromanches and the D-Day Beaches
A day spent on the beaches at Arromanches stirred so much emotion that a short film was created. The film has been shown to small audiences but makes its internet debut this weekend, the 65th Anniversary of the D-day landings.
The Beach
Standing on the sand provoked so many thoughts. Behind were candy shops and arcades, it looked like any other village by the sea. Along the beach were people playing, lovers walking and kites flying, it could have been any vast, wild expanse of sand. But ahead, like giant metal rocks sunken in the sand at low tide, were the remains of Mulberry Harbour. What an unnerving reminder of a sinister past.
The Day
On that day, June 6th 1944, thousands upon thousands of fathers and sons, of friends and neighbours, poured onto the beach, into a hot metal storm of machine gun fire. Like some horrendous computer game with real, deadly consequences, many were left for dead in the breakers, barely reaching the shore. In the few hours that followed, history lurched from Fascism to Freedom as tanks rolled past the small, empty shops in the long deserted village street of Arromanches.
The Film
When words fail, pictures and music take over. If you have 3 minutes and 14 seconds, then pay your respects to those who won the freedom that you enjoy…

A moving and powerful article, it means a huge amount to me as my Grandad was in the first wave of D-Day landings. He was lucky enough to reach land and survive, so many weren’t.The war and in particular D-Day were the only things he would never talk about. Thanks for the film too, we must never forget the sacrifices made.

A very moving tribute to a day, and a time, we ought never to forget.

I agree with the above comments. We should never forget or lack thanks for the courage, sacrifice, and altruism of the men that found themselves storming that beach that day.

We should never forget that these men gave their lives for our freedom. My brother-in-law was one of those soldiers who survived. My dad was a sailor on Bouganville.

A great article- it is amazingly frightening how large portions of Normandy are just completely flattened and lumpy from all of the fighting and bombings.
Great article- highly informative.

I don’t think I recall the Battle of Arromanches..but the article you wrote and the film told the story..there are so many lesser-known battles, vying to make their mark on their nation’s psyche..I’m glad I came over.

Your choice of words and the film are magnificent….”In the few hours that followed, history lurched from Fascism to Freedom…” Perfect!

Well done, no words, beautiful music and photos say it all.
Thanx for humbling my day, and I am grateful for those who fight so that I have the freedoms I have today, such as writing how I feel.
God Bless America, and all their fallen heros!
