The Reign of Napoleon

Napoleon took control of France when it was most vulnerable and needed a leader. Through his guidance and protection France became a very successful and strong leader.

Napoleon created a grand army to control and gain new land. At its peak, this army consisted of about 600,000 men. This army was made up mostly of people from France, Belgium, and Deutschland. The first grand army was made up of 6 companies. But, as they began to claim more of Europe its strength and size grew. Napoleons success is due to the way he used and controlled the army to gain power. His army was divided into different parts (corps) as it grew. His grand army fought in many battles. Some of the most well known battles include the invasion of Russia, battle of Waterloo, and the battle of Borodino. But, during the invasion of Russia, he lost a large percentage of his army due to disease and hunger. This is the period where his army began to fall. After Napoleon escaped from Elba due to his first exile, his grand army eventually rejoined him. His glory lasted about 100 days before he was exiled again.

The grand army’s symbol was the French Imperial Eagle. Without his army Napoleon would not have been a strong leader. His army was so large that it constantly patrolled France and other countries while he was able to send others to fight. The grand army trained many people to do different kinds of jobs. His army included imperial guards, cavalry, foot mens, horse artillery, engineers, medics, and communications. The grand army was one of the largest and most successful army due to Napoleon’s great leadership throughout his campaign.
