Transform Old Tanks on Coral Reefs in Thailand

he Thai Army deposited in the sea 25 of its older tanks to convert them into artificial coral reefs and help restore marine biodiversity in the region south of the country, local media reported. Armored vehicles will be submerged next week off the coast of Narathiwat province, 750 kilometers south of the capital, the newspaper “Bangkok Post”.

They are part of a project sponsored by Queen Sirikit to improve the marine ecosystem and, over time, fish repopulate an area of great biodiversity, but hampered by blast fishing.

Tanks, T69-2 model made in China, were purchased in 1987 and became obsolete in 2004 to be too expensive to repair and find parts.

Gen. Chavalit Yongchaiyudh, then head of the Thai army and future prime minister (1996 and 1997), bought a 50% discount on the official price, but then their quality was lower than expected.

This one way of getting rid of scrap metal trash and making a machine of war useful to the environment.

I hope they have cleaned those tanks…I mean they look so rusted o.o, wouldn’t the fish die? Anyways, I hope that this would be successful
