USS New York, Rises From The Ashes of WTC

Incorporating steel from the WTC the newest US Naval Vessel the USS New York is ready for service and eager to get into the fight.

Tuesday the USS New York, built  using some 7 1/2 tons of steel from the site of the WTC left its shipyard in Avondale, LA and began its journey to its namesake city, New York.

Thousands of workers at Northrop Grumman Shipbuilders yard in Avondale help to build the ship and were on hand Tuesday along with others to celebrate the event.

Organizer of the”line the levees” event in the New Orleans area hoped for a very patriotic send off for the first of three WTC tribute ships. The other two ships still under construction , the — Arlington and Somerset — will join the New York as soon as they are complete.

The USS New York is expected to be welcomed home to a fanfare of excitement and an outpouring if love. an official military send of and commission ceremony will be held Nov. 7 , after which the New York will be stationed in Virginia.

The USS New York is the newest of the Navy’s San Antonio Class LPD (Landing Platform Dock) warships. The advanced technology and capabilities of the newest warships in this class effectively replaces older amphibious landing platforms the Navy has used.

The Newest Navy Warship is 111 feet longer than her battleship namesake. She will carry sea-based platforms, including:

  • The V-22 tilt-rotor Osprey aircraft
  • Three types of helicopters
  • 14 expeditionary fighting vehicles (EFVs) and/or several air-cushioned landing craft (LCACs) for across-the-beach deployments of U.S. Marine Corps and Special Forces personnel.

Since the terrible attacks on 9/11 we as a Nation have been working to attain justice for our loved ones that lost their lives that day. The USS New York is a milestone and a symbol of the commitment we have to seeing this through. In order to insure that such a tragedy never happens again.
Former Governor of New York George Pataki, I think said it best.
” On September 11,2001 our Nations enemies brought the fight to New York…. The USS New York will now bring the fight to our Nations enemies…well into the future.”

And as the motto of the ship so rightly says.. “Strength forged through a sacrifice. Never Forget.”
