War is Becoming Popular

Research says humans are increasing the rate at which they wage war. Aren’t we all glad about that?

War is popular.

Wait, dont blame me for saying that.  I’m just telling the facts as reported by scientists who may have nothing better to do.  Or, they really believe it’s important to have everyone know this little factoid.  Maybe war should have it’s own Facebook page or Twitter address.

But, to understand this notion, one need go no further than the University of Warwick where researchers have revealed that since 1870 the frequency of wars has grown by an average two percent a year.  That may not seem like a lot, but over time it means humans are battling each other on a regular basis and at this rate who knows if we will have time to do anything else but fight.

More Countries Means More Wars

The researchers suggest that the number of countries in the world are partly to blame for the phenomenon.  In 1870 there were a mere 47 countries in the world, while today there are colse to 200.  So, I guess the next time a country demands independence, the U.N. ought to say ‘not so fast, you potential warmonger.’

In another statement of the obvious, the researchers suggest that larger countries are more likely to take military action than smaller countries, although there is no tendency that a richer country is any more likely to wage war than a poorer country.  So, a richer country can afford more military toys, but I guess they don’t like to use them – just for show, right?  The scientists suggest, however, the reason is that richer countries have fewer incentives to make war – if they’ve already got wealth what need do they have to fight?  Hence, there is reason for the richer to get richer and the poorer to fight to get rich.

One Big Rich Country

So, the conclusion of this research is that every country ought to find a way to get rich – other than taking military action to take the wealth of another country.  Or, perhaps if we combine all the countries of the world into one mega-country – which would be very rich, correct? – then there would be no incentive for anyone to start a war, and lots of incentive to stop fighting wars already taking place.  So, not only would the military be out of work, but so would the scientists who bother studying such things.  Sounds like a good trade off to me.  What do you think?
