It was unknowing to me that after reaching a certain time in service on active duty. That my leaders would make a recommendation to decide my fate. To stay in the U.S. Air Force and reenlist I had to be recommended for NCO status. To me the decision to keep me in the service. It seemed that there was more time needed to make the decision. It was unfair in a sense because as I reflect back I was not being trained to stay in the service. It seems to me that my leaders did not want me to stay in the service. Or else I would have been trained throughout and recommended. I already was recommended for reenlistment.
What happened was I was reassigned to another duty section from the one that recommended me for reenlistment. Had I known it would be a rather subjective decision. I would have requested to stay where I was recommended for reenlistment. I did not know. It happened to me even though I received numerous certificates of appreciation. When I left Bolling AFB, Washington, DC my duty section presented me with a plaque. At Nellis AFB, Nevada I received Airman of the month. As it turns out they were meaningless. I remember the Chief of the Consolidated Base Personnel Office. Said something to the effect of you have nobody higher than a tech sergeant.
So I was not invited to stay longer because I was denied NCO status August 1982. Also known at the time as a promotion from Senior Airman to Sergeant even though the pay grade was the same. So I discharged at my normal date of separation. I did not want to be discharged.
I left Las Vegas, Nevada by way of my personal vehicle for my home state of record Maryland. It would take me seven days to drive because I only drove in daylight.
Questions consumed me after my discharge and they all had to do with why I was discharged…
