Are The Rich Doing Enough for The World?

Are rich people and governments doing enough in helping the planet and charitable causes?

As a world we like to think we can hold our head up high and say we do our “bit”. But is a “bit” enough?

Yes the world is full of people or countries crying our for aid, money or just the bare basics to survive. Is throwing money at such things enough? Do certain people or countries sit back and not tackle their own problems and wait for the next hand out?

It is a very diverse subject and with no doubt many complex layers interwoven into one another in how or why is the best solution to tackle this.

But until that solution is sought and found and dealt with, people continue to die. Children cry out for life saving operations and their parents then find out the cost is just stupendous. So they rally round with local communities and hope people have a good heart and meet the cost of travel, the operations and the wages involved. As humans we usually pull this off. But again it is the average man or woman putting their hands in their pockets to fund this.

Of course there are rich people out there with a heart who hear about such stories and come to the aid. But should this happen more? Should more people far more wealthy than the average man or woman, do more to assist the financial burdens of certain charities?

There is an old saying that “charity starts at home”, and yes this is very true. It is human nature to care for the ones you love as much as yourself before anyone else. But certain people and governments are in a position where their interest alone in a week could perhaps pay for a new kidney machine or ambulance or operation for a child. Let us not forget a new well for clean drinking water or food for a village for an entire year with irrigation thrown in to boot.

In the news lately nine nations have called upon the rich nations to assist in the preservation of the rain forests. That is just one example.

So opinions as to whether governments and the wealthy should contribute more to causes is open to debate. No doubt people will come out and say that many rich people do their “thing” and this is obvious when you see the stars attending schools or poverty stricken regions.

But what about cost? Money doesn’t buy you everything.

But what we all know is it certainly helps.

If the rich really does want to help and give something to charity, then do it without the press, cameras, no publicity whatsoever… Most people think that it’s just what they’re after to say that they are among those “good people.” Giving something in return for publicity…

Well-written article! Charity indeed helps many people in need. Not only money here must be involved but also moral support, your time and effort as well.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful article.

The world is in a mess financially and I think the charities are going to suffer. When the rich are rich they flash it about, as soon as there is a blip, they keep their hoards.

I think that took a lot of thinking. Something to ponder about and act on. Even though we’re not rich, I think our pennies in the right place can mean a lot.

Great article. I don’t think they are, I think they think its survival of the fittest or just go and adopt another child from abroad to easy the conscience!

As long there’s a hungry mouth to feed, it means the filthy rich are not doing enough to help. A big heart is always more useful than a deep pocket.;)

I believe in everyone doing a little bit, and according to what you can. I don’t think that the rich are the only ones responsible to give more. I believe in a combination of individuals (rich and poor) plus the world leaders working towards a goal. But that is a dream – because some governments are corrupt and no matter how much money is spent it will never get where it has too. And some non-profit organizations that are given hefty grants for social programs do not utilize the money well or pocket it, and the government ways to track it are not the best. Also, I’ve witness the ungratefulness of some families in need, towards a free service, and also the take-take give me-give me attitude as well, or the, but I am too busy to do my part. Billions can be given by the rich, but until the poor changes its mentality, and the government stops fueling an attitude of apathy, and each one of us teaches/learns responsibility for ourselves and other humans – it is all wasted money. But that is only my personal opinion.

It doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor, eventhough someone is poor if he has the heart to help others then he’d be willing to help in his own little way :)

If we all do our share to humanity, I believe the world can be a better place, whether we are rich or poor. There are generous rich people and there are many who are corrupt. Although money solves many needs, it is not the end-all answer to the world’s problems. Very good write up.
