Fox News Banned From Canada for Lying – It’s About Time!

There  is a lot of fuss being made about Fox news being banned from Canada. some people feel that by banning a news media for lying, free speech is being censored. Also shocking is the statement that Fox news was banned for lying. Are we to assume that in light of the fuss being made about this ban for lying.

Correct me if I am wrong but aren’t journalists supposedly governed by ethics and laws or are they allowed to tell lies under the guise of “freedom of speech” If not then I can’t understand comments I read online that suggest that banning a media outlet for lying is an affront on freedom of speech. Journalists are governed by certain ethical standards which would include telling the truth.

According to the Canadian Radio act, a licenser cannot broadcast misleading or false news. This law has meant that the right wing Fox News that regularly pushes the button as far as the facts in news reporting is concerned, cannot operate in Canada. Where civility in broadcasting has all but disappeared in the US media, Canada is determined to keep its political discourse civil.

So why do US citizens condone false and divisive news reporting that Fox news has become associated with? It could be because journalistic ethics are not as valued there as they are in Canada. It could also mean that since Fox news is a puppet of the monied class, the masses have little say in the degradation of the written or unwritten code of conduct of journalism.

But there is hope. Americans have started the Occupy Wall Street Movement which has spread all over the world. Despite a few setbacks there is  no doubt that they will rise from the ashes again. If anyone can, the Americans can call attention to a divisive news media and eventually bring an end to its existence. It will be difficult though since money talks.
