People and Politics
Nations, communities and the political processes that impact them.
While economies are undergoing different changes rapidly all over the world, communities and nations are realising the implications of politics on their day to lives. In democratic Countries there is a fear among people specially in the developing nations that Politicians elected to power are definitely not acting in the interest of the peoples more important problems such as poverty and quality of life of the poor.A case in point is India which has shown great strides in the advancement of their major economic goals but lags far behind when it comes to poverty alleviation and development of their rural sector. The same is true of small countries like Sr Lenka where development strategies and infrastructure improvements have hardly impacted on the lives of the poor.Poverty alleviation has been totally neglected in some of these countries to that extent that the communities living in the rural areas have been living in squalor for almost over four decades.
Some of these countries have been under colonial rule for many years. And after independence where self rule was mainly undertaken to bring about better living standards for the poor, there had been hardly any significant developments as compared to what was existing at the time of colonial
administration. If you take a case of the very basic railway services started by the British in Sr Lenka it is sad to say hardly a 100 kilometers have been added to this railway network since independence 60 years ago leave alone the infrastructure development thereof which has in-fact deteriorated since. A good example is the kind of catering services rendered both at the Railway stations and in the Buffet restaurants in the train. They are in some cases not fit for human use anymore. There is hardly any cleanliness or standards of sanitation maintained so as to be of suitable public use.
