Red Cross was born when a young Swiss gentleman called Henry Dunant saw the war between the French and the Austrian in 1859. Thousands of soldiers lay wounded and dying on the battlefield, with few to attend and remove them to hospital. He realized that many lives could have been saved if the doctors had been captured and if field hospital on the battlefield had been protected from bombs. He decided to provide medical aid and supplies in times of war to both sides, and the Red Cross was born.
Red Cross workers areas also active in areas where natural disasters like earthquakes, floods, drought and famine affect people. Teams of workers set up camps for people who have lost their homes. They supply food, medicines and treat their injuries.
