Are the Photos of the Borneo Snake Monster Real or Fake?
Two recent photos show that a legendary serpent may have returned. But controversy swirls around the authenticity of the pictures.
In an internet poll, a slight majority of users believe two recent photos of a 100-foot-long snake in Borneo are real. But not everyone agrees with them. Many believe the pictures are photoshopped, citing that the monster serpent looks like it is posing for the photos. They also have problems with the anonymity of the people taking the pictures.
To bring you up to date, Borneo legend has it that a giant snake called the Nabau plies the Baleh River. Villagers believe that the photos show that the monster has returned. One of the pictures was supposedly taken from a helicopter by a member of a disaster team monitoring flood regions. It shows a huge serpent swimming in the Baleh.
A second photo was taken in a remote village and shows the giant snake swimming on top of the river. According to legend, the Nabau could change its shape and had the head of a dragon. The pictures do not show a dragon but it could be an enormous snake, which is more than enough to mess up your day. Like I said before, many people believe the photos while others do not.
The images were submitted anonymously, which could be a sign that they are not authentic. Critics cite another problem: Whoever took the pictures estimated the beast to be a hundred feet long. However, when compared to its surroundings, the snake appears to be much larger. Another issue: Why only two photos? It seems like somebody with a camera would be clicking away at the sight of something so stupendous.
Apparently, there is a history of panic in Borneo when something like this happens, with large portions of the population going on giant snake hunts. On the other hand, many in that country say the photos should be published. The people’s right to know, that sort of thing. If these pictures are fake, then it is very irresponsible of the hoaxers if they cause a public commotion.
The photos look photoshopped to me but I am not an expert. I also wonder why the people who took the pictures would want to remain unnamed. It sounds to me like a couple of computer guys got hold of a picture of the Baleh River and a Borneo village. They then photoshopped a picture of a large snake onto the photos. I would say the chances of the images being real are 20%.
However, if I were to visit Borneo, I would be very careful around the Baleh River.
