Are UFOs Extraterrestrial? Exploring Some Alternatives

I recently watched a televised debate on the nature of UFO origins. The panelists presented many arguments about whether or not UFOs have an extraterrestrial origin, but they said little about possible alternatives. It seems most who believe; consider it indisputable that this phenomenon is of an extraterrestrial origin, while skeptics just cynically consider UFOs nonexistent.

Enigmatic Rendezvous

A Final Case History to take a look at

The above image is an artistic recreation I designed to depict an eyewitness account I collected from a local friend back in 1994. The witness and another friend were hiking in a park north of Memphis, Tennessee. They decided to head back to their car, as the hour was getting late approaching dusk, when they noticed a multicolored glowing orb meandering through the forest trees, leaving a wispy purple trail in its wake. They ran through the trees following the orb as it approached the Mississippi River. When they came to the river bank, they saw a silvery metallic domed saucer shaped craft giving off a bluish glow, floating silently over the river. A ring of similar orbs appeared imbedded into the top of the craft, with one empty depression. The orb they had followed zoomed up to the larger craft, and came to rest within the empty depression, completing the ring. They both stood amazed as the craft slowly traveled away northward over the river until it left their line of sight. My friend said he rarely spoke of this incident, since most people scoffed whenever he mentioned it. He had since fallen out of contact with the other eyewitness, so I was unable to interview that other witness. This case is just one among many eyewitness encounters for which conventional explanations fail to account.

A Call for a Wider Scientific Study

Exotic and unidentified craft carry out maneuvers in our skies all around us, and apparently have done so with impunity for centuries, perhaps millennia. It is a sad and unfortunate thing that those few scientists who’ve had the courage to actually take the time to study this phenomenon are far too often ridiculed and looked down upon by their peers. It is past time for the rest of us to rise up and insist on a change to this mistreatment of both the eyewitnesses and those who see the need for a genuine scientific study of their accounts. What are scientists afraid of, actually learning that UFOs are real? Apparently, for that’s exactly what happened to Astronomy Professor, J. Allen Hynek, (1910-1986), who at the behest of the US Air Force became the astronomical consultant to Project Grudge, then subsequently Project Blue Book. He began his study of UFO cases as a skeptic in 1949, but over the years shifted over from his extreme skepticism to one who believed UFOs represented, as he put it, “an aspect or domain of the natural world not yet explored by science.”

More information about Professor Hynek can be found at:

http://www.daviddarling.info/encyclopedia/H/Hynek.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._Allen_Hynek

http://www.ufoevidence.org/documents/doc757.htm

We need more scientists with the kind of integrity and honest courage typified by Dr. J. Allen Hynek to do justice to serious scientific analysis of the UFO phenomenon.

Well done. For me, scenario #3 works best. I’m starting to think of time as more of a place along a line, than a moment. Since 94% of matter is either dark energy or dark matter, who knows what is occupying the very space we are? Our minds may not be able to comprehend the true extent of nature.
    Thanks,
    Clay

There has to be something else. Human Beings are not the be all and end all. Whether they are extraterrestrial or not is a facsinating debate. Nice work

While I’m not a UFO fan,I must say that this is a very well-written debate (not something we see very often on online writing sites). It was delicately handled and sensitively and expertly expressed.

My views are not the same as yours, but great article anyway.

Fascinating … as a victem of a 6 hour “intrupted journey” similar to the betty & barney hill and Travis Walton cases I certainly have a closely held personal belief as to the origin & occupants of unidentified craft. One issue that I would like to see put to rest is the so called abductions as perceived by many sleepers & dreamers. ‘Taint so folks! Talk to your local anathesiologist (sic?) re how many patients come out from under and claim little big eyes were present. So too with QUALIFIED hypnotists re recovered memories. Withnall due respect to Bud Hopkins, the human mind is a complex organ … seems to me that there are way too darned many big eyed grey critters making amusing reading in a lot of UFO sites.

    Hi Bill,
I was very glad to get a response from you on http://www.trueufosightings . It seems that some people don’t take me seriously or they have another agenda. I don’t think you are one of them however. I’ve been involved in this project for many years. I’ve also experimented in many things that I feel will lead us to the truth. I hope you contact me with your thoughts. We are all in this thing together. My e-mail: bodenhammerk@aol.com I hope you will contact me. I live in Berlin, but we have the chance still to keep in touch. I think it is important that people of like minds stay in contact.

I am hooked as well! You have logically and persuasively laid out several theories that I had never even considered. I am of the mindset that God created us and this world; He’s God, He can create anything He wants. The study is fascinating!

I remember reading Chariot of the Gods many years ago and I read Contact too. These books made a lot of sense to me, there has to be something going on even it it is an experiment in mass brain control, (another theory one of the books proposed). Personally I am inclined to believe they are either angelic or simply higher intellectual beings from other parts of the universe, (not even necessarily planets). Who are we to think that God only created us.

I find your reading to be original and drawing. Thank you. I am surprised, however, that you did not mention the idea of demonic activity. After all, many things go on in the spiritual realm we do not see. What about the possibility that sporadically these realms cross?

Very best wishes and thank you,
